The Press-Dispatch B-3 Wednesday, December 19, 2012 Lady Chargers eighth gets two big victories By Mike Johansen After a tough loss to Princeton, the Pike Central Middle School Lady Chargers eighth grade team rallied to pick up two wins in two games to enter Christmas on a positive note. The Lady Chargers lost to Princeton 19-41 to start the three game week. "The Princeton game was one of those games a coach wishes never happened. As a team we had 31 turnovers and we gave up too many lay-ups. After this week we have a good break with no games so we will be able to get into the gym and get some practice time," said PC Coach Eric Knight. Princeton slipped ahead 6-5 in the opening quarter and had an 11-6 margin in the second to lead 17-11 at the break. They had the third period by a 14-2 margin and the fourth 10-6. Sydney Brooks had 5 points, Jo Whitehead 5, Cassidy brothers 2, Kiersten Gish 2, Alexis McDowell 2, Madison Query 2 and Ashley Harris 1. Also participating were Abby Hillyard, Hannah Yager, Kaitlyn Foster, Michaela Greener and Amy Chastain. The turn around came in the next game with the Lady Chargers downing the Owensville crew 30-20 in Pocket Athletic Conference play. "The girls played very good today. They drove the ball to the basket and got to the free throw line. As a team they took care of the ball and only had six turnovers," said Coach Knight. "Michaela Greener and Jo Whitehead both had very good games. They played with heart and hustle. They both battled the whole game. As a team the girls are understanding the game better and I was proud of their clock management." The Lady Chargers surged ahead 10-4 in the opening quarter of play. Owensville had an 8-5 edge in the second, but Pike Central still lead at halftime 15-12. The third period was a slow one on the offensive end, but PC had a 4-2 edge to lead 19-14 going into the final period. They had an 11-6 margin in the final frame to win 30-20. Whitehead had 11 points, Brooks 7, Hillyard 3, Query 3, McDowell 2, Gish 2, Brothers 1 and Greener 1. The Lady Chargers eighth grade girls closed the week of play and the before Christmas schedule with a 24-23 win over the BarrReeve Lady Vikings. "Today's game was a very big win for these girls. After getting beat by 30 points last year, the girls played the best game of the year to upset an undefeated Barr-Reeve team. The girls played great defense and outstanding offense. They showed great clock management and took care of the H Sports Tidbits Continued from Page B1 she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!" And Mary said: "My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me—holy is his name. His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation. He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful to Abraham and his descendants forever, just as he promised our ancestors." Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home. The Birth of John the Baptist  When it was time for Elizabeth to have her baby, she gave birth to a son. Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her great mercy, and they shared her joy. On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to name him after his father Zechariah, but his mother spoke up and said, "No! He is to be called John." The Birth of Jesus In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. And everyone went to their own town to register.  So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them. And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger." And thus Jesus was born to be our savior. This is what Christmas is about! ball. They have won three out of the last four games right before the holiday break," said Coach Knight. "Michaela "Lefty" Greener had another good game. She was big at the foul line knocking down three of four at the end of the game to keep the team in the lead. Sydney (Brooks) and Jo (Whitehead) had really good games as well. They both took care of the ball the whole game and played great defense. "I am very proud of these young ladies and look forward to seeing them after Christmas." Barr-Reeve had a 3-2 lead after the first quarter and 13-7 at halftime. Pike Central rallied with an 8-1 margin in the third period to lead 1514. Both teams scored nine points in the final frame.
