George Spohr, Courier & Press (Evansville) EVANSVILLE, Ind. — I met Abbey Doyle during one of my first visits to Evansville. I was leading a strategy session, and Abbey — who, at the time, was our features editor — asked a lot of smart questions and provided a lot of valuable suggestions. I left our meeting hoping I'd someday be able to find a role more befitting of Abbey's talents and knowledge. That day arrived a few weeks ago when Abbey was named news director of the Courier & Press. As news director, Abbey oversees the day-to-day newsgathering operations among the editors and reporters who work out of our offices in Evansville, Henderson and Morganfield. Abbey brings so much to the role: She's a Vincennes native who has covered everything from feature stories to the police beat. She's a natural leader who sees the best in people while holding them to high expectations. And she's one of those parents who proves my theories that moms are superheroes. She and her husband Michael, who is our Tri-State Trending reporter, are some of the most active parents I've met. Their column — A Parently Obvious — is one of my favorite pieces of content we produce out of our newsroom. (Her most recent missive? Talking about how divine intervention thwarted her son's attempted church-burning.) Abbey's team includes: Jeff Walker, content strategist. Jeff's primary role is to work directly with our reporters in Evansville. His background as a digital producer led to the creation of some of our most-read content, including our Unreal Estate feature. As a producer, Jeff developed a keen sense of how we can better connect our content with our audience. Doug White, content coach. Doug's primary role is to lead The Gleaner in Henderson and the Union County Advocate in Morganfield. As the top editor of both newsrooms, Doug oversees our reporters in both offices. His deep knowledge of the Tri-State help ensures stories have regional appeal to our readers. Denny Simmons, content coach. Denny's primary role is to oversee our visuals team, which includes photographers and videographers. While Denny's team augments our reporters' work, it also produces standalone photography and videos. That allows us to determine how a story is best told — in words, in photos or in video — and proceed accordingly. Abbey has one of the toughest jobs in our newsroom. She and her three deputies are responsible for assigning, editing and producing content from the largest newsgath- ering team in the Tri-State. On any given day, she helps to shepherd through a dozen or more stories, working with editors and reporters to make each piece of content better. In addition to that, Abbey helps recap each weekend's top upcom- ing events — both in story and video form. Look for great things to come as Abbey further puts her stamp on our coverage. Doyle named news director of the Evansville Courier & Press Doyle
