Eric Holcomb in the one-day special session Monday (May 14). The Republican super- majorities moved the legislation through both Houses in one-day with no testimony and no amendments. The bill contains language HSPA testifi ed against prior to May 14 before the Legislative Council , led by Speaker of the House Brian Bosma, R-Indianapolis, and President Pro Tem David Long, R-Fort Wayne. H.B. 1315(ss) contains changes to how the Gary and Muncie school districts are operated by the state, which took over control of both districts. It also sets out guidelines for the Distressed Unit Advisory Board (DUAB) in determining what school districts are placed on a Watch List (in danger of state takeover) and steps that can be taken by DUAB to turn school districts around to avoid the Watch List – primarily through a corrective action plan created by the school board and DUAB. The bill's author was Rep. Tim Brown, R-Crawfordsville. The bill's sponsor was Sen. Ryan Mishler, R-Bremen. The 2018 General Assembly concluded with a one-day special session. Mark Bennett Tribune-Star (Terre Haute) A sense of optimism adds to the importance of an upcoming Friday this summer. America will observe National Ernie Pyle Day on Aug. 3, which will include a series of activities in Bloomington, where the beloved World War II newspaper columnist studied journalism at Indiana University. It's not the fi rst National Ernie Pyle Day. The Ernie Pyle Legacy Foundation and a coalition of partners organized a grassroots celebration last Aug. 3 — Pyle's 117th birthday — in Albuquerque, N.M., where the Hoosier-born reporter and his wife lived in the 1940s. This year's event comes with the added offi ciality of congressional approval. On Dec. 20, the U.S. Senate passed Resolution 345 affi rming Aug. 3 as National Ernie Pyle Day. The voice vote affi rming the observance happened as the divisions in Congress were under a national spotlight. That same night, the House and Senate debated and fi nally agreed on a stop-gap spending bill to avoid another government shutdown. Members of the Ernie Pyle Legacy Foundation, the nonprofi t group advocating for the designa- tion, wondered if the national-day resolution could get an OK amid the disagreements. "I thought, 'This will never happen,'" foundation spokesman Gerald Maschino recalled last week from his home in California, "but, by gosh, it did happen." Pulliam Internship Program. This is the 18th year for the program which matches 10 student appli- cants with HSPA member publica- tions for 10-week, paid internships. "The Pulliam internships is the seminal program of the HSPA Foundation and one that illustrates the young journalistic talent constantly joining newspapers on a yearly basis," said Steve Key, executive director and general counsel of the Hoosier State Press Association. "I enjoy meeting the students when they come into the program and then seeing their bylines in Indiana newspapers when they start their professional careers."
