Vehicle pursuits between police and fleeing suspects also were on the rise. But officers' use of firearms decreased. These and other findings from 2017 were encapsulated in the Milwaukee Fire and Police Commission's recently released annual report, which delves into statistical and other pertinent data in the city's two public safety agencies. The seven-member commis- sion, which exists through state statute, serves as the civilian over- sight body of both departments. The organization releases its own report each year, independent of the police and fire departments. The report also looks at differ- ent programs commissioners have helped spearhead this past year in an effort the appointees said is aimed at improving com- munity relations. "I'm proud of the important work the FPC undertook in 2017," FPC chairman Steve DeVougas said in a statement. "This body is statutorily tasked with a broad range of important duties … and the commission staff should be proud of the progress that was made last year on behalf of the Milwaukee community." The 42-page document offered up a snapshot of different statisti- cal data, some vetted through independent sources the FPC enlisted as part of its analysis. Case in point: The FPC asked Steven Brandl, professor in the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee's criminal justice department, to analyze and crunch the numbers related to MPD's use of force incidents. Use of officers' firearms down In his review of the depart- ment's numbers from the past year, Brandl noted the city's sworn police force used force 684 times — a 4.6 percent increase from the number of incidents See FPC REPORT on Page 15 But their use of firearms in subduing suspects has declined Local news at your fingertips Visit www.gmtoday.com Like us on Facebook: www.facebook.com/MilwaukeePost WILLS, TRUSTS, POWERS OF ATTORNEY, PROBATE Pre and post death planning by a professional with over 40 years of experience.
