You may take medication for physical pain, but there is no instant reme- dy for the pain of losing someone. We may try denial or rationalization, but it will still be there when we come back to reality. How then do we deal with the emptiness and numbness of our loss? One of the best ways to deal with grief is to embrace it. The journey of grief is a pro- cess that we must all go through and the more we fi ght it and or try to avoid it, the more severe the pain and the longer the du- ration will be. Grief is part of the progression of letting go, and if we choose to never let go then we will be caught in a cycle of continu- ous emotional upheavals. It is human nature to ache when we lose someone who has been an integral part of our world and the length of the grieving process is relative to how intertwined we were with our loved one. The writer, Jamie Anderson, made a pow- erful statement about grief, when he said, "Grief, I've learned is really just love. It's all the love you want to give, but cannot. All the unspent love gathers up in the corners of your eyes, the lump in your throat, and in the hollow part of your chest. Grief is just love with no place to go." We must not allow our grief to control us. One of the greatest ways to deal with the pain of grief is not to internalize your pain but rather release it in some positive way. As we fi nd meaningful ways to remember our loved one, closure will eventually come and the process of grief will have trans- formed our lives. Whether it be through a support group, writing in a journal or an act of remembering our loved one, we must em- brace it and then release it. We will fi nd that our grief journey can make a positive differ- ence in our life and in the lives of others.
