William Corbitt Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp #525 in Rutherfordton, NC received a letter from Civil War Trust President Jim Lighthizer detailing a new campaign of the Trust (now a Division of the American Battlefi eld Trust) which will ultimately cost 3.5 million dollars - a project that caught Pastor Lovelace's eye due to it's connection to Rutherford County. In May 1861 as North Carolina was marshalling delegates to attend a State Convention to decide the issue of whether or not the State would secede, some of the young men of Rutherford County were calling for companies to form and go off to serve in the defense of the South. On June 3, 1861 the Burnt Chimney (now Forest City) Volunteers went off to enlist in the defense of North Carolina. They became Company D of the 16th North Carolina Regiment. The following day, June 4, the Rutherfordton Rifl emen or Rutherfordton Volunteers followed their comrades becoming Company G of the 16th North Carolina Regiment. Almost 2 years later, members of both Companies would fi nd themselves in General Robert E. Lee's Second "Invasion" of the North which led them to a small quiet Pennsylvian town that would become an American watershed moment - Gettysburg. In the fi ghting on July 1, 1863, the 16th North Carolina Regiment found itself engaged in heavy fi ghting with members of the 1st Corps. Many soldiers from Rutherford County were wounded during the 3 days of that momentous battle and many were killed or died of wounds received there. Rutherford County native, 2nd Lt. John B. Ford was among the many who was killed on July 1, 1863. So it was that Pastor Lovelace gasped when he saw that one of the areas marked for Civil War Trust's "target property" to be acquired encompassed the entire ground upon which the 16th North Carolina fought that hot July day. At the May 18th meeting of the Lt. William Corbitt SCV Camp, Commander Lovelace informed the Camp of what he had read from the Civil War Trust and the Camp collected funds and donated $100 to the American Battlefi eld Trust - Civil War Trust Division campaign to preserve part of not only America's but also Rutherford County's hallowed ground as that ground was stained 155 years ago with the blood of many of her sons as they fought, bled and some gave the last full measure of devotion for the Rights of the Old North State. The Lt. William Corbitt Camp meets the 3rd Friday at 289 N. Main Street Rutherfordton, NC and invites all interested in Confederate Heritage and CIvil War History to attend our monthly meetings to preserve the true history of the South for future generations.
