By Kyla Brewer TV Media presidential election The hotmemory, forbut politicsmay be a are still a topic many Americans. NBC is taking advantage of the election-year buzz to present a sneak peek at a new comedy about life in the White House. Comedy is the name of the game as an extraordinary yet dysfunctional First Family struggles with average family problems in 1600 Penn, airing Monday, Dec. 17. Bill Pullman headlines 1600 Penn as fictional President Dale Gilchrist, who juggles the demands of being a world leader with those of being head of his family. At his side in the White House is his second wife, Emily Nash Gilchrist, played by Jenna Elfman. Eager to win over the kids, the stepmom jumps in to help, whether theyre struggling in school or at home. Like many families, the Gilchrists have welcomed grown son Skip (Broadway sensation Josh Gad) back home. The Hollywood Reporter had good things to say about the shows ensemble cast, which includes Andre Holland as Press Secretary Marshall Malloy. Among his many other duties, its Malloys job to keep Skips Water Softener Specials Rent a Culligan water conditioner or Drinking Water System $ 90 6 he is primarily known for his work in theater and film. His big break came in Ruthless People (1986), opposite Danny DeVito and Bette Midler, followed by such films as Spaceballs (1987) and While You Were Sleeping (1995). Pullmans new TV gig isnt the first time hes played the president of the United States, either. He starred as the daring commander in chief in the boxoffice smash Independence Day (1997). His Broadway credits include The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia? and Oleana. As for his television work, Pullman recently earned a Saturn Award nomination for his role in the BBC/Starz effort Torchwood: Miracle Day. Unlike her co-star, Elfman has plenty of TV experience. The actress began her career as a professional dancer, but quickly segued into acting in the ABC sitcom Townies in 1996. Unfortunately, the series didnt last, but Elfman has made a lasting impression on 20th Century Fox executives. A year later, she charmed audiences as the leading lady in Dharma & Greg, which aired on ABC from 1997 to 2002. She didnt have as much luck with her next two television series, the CBS comedies Courting Alex in 2006, and Accidentally on Purpose in 2009. However, things have been looking up for Elfman since she landed a recurring role in Season 5 of the legal drama Damages. The star power of Elfman and Pullman, combined with the wit of 1600 Penn co-creator, writer and executive producer Gad, has critics sitting up and taking notice. Viewers may recognize him from a number of guest-starring stints in such TV series as Back to You, The Daily Show, Modern Family and New Girl. Fresh off his starmaking role as Elder Arnold Cunningham in Broadways The Book of Mormon, Gad is poised to win over television audiences as bumbling First Son Skip. Martha MacIsaac, Amara Miller and Benjamin Stockham also star as the presidents other children. NBCs giving the new sitcom a great lead-in by airing the sneak preview after the final performance episode of the hit reality TV series The Voice. Its a strategic move to hook viewers before the holidays in anticipation of 1600 Penns premiere on Thursday, Jan. 10. While the last big NBC series to tackle life in the White House was the uber-popular drama The West Wing, this is not the first time a network has taken viewers inside the home lives of politicians. Way back in 1979, ABC premiered Benson, about a wisecracking butler (Robert Guillaume) for a governor. In the 90s, the alpha-network brought Michael J. Fox back to television as Mike Flaherty, the deputy mayor of New York, in Spin City. More recently, Sigourney Weaver starred as Secretary of State Elaine Barrish in the miniseries Political Animals. In fact, 1600 Penn is in line with a recent spate of politically themed shows such as HBOs Julia Louis-Dreyfus vehicle VEEP and the recently canned Starz series Boss, starring Kelsey Grammer. With bigwigs such as Weaver, Louis-Dreyfus and Grammer in the mix, it makes sense that Pullman would get in on the action.
