Walker plays it safe and remains quiet MILWAUKEE COUNTY'S WEEKLY NEWSPAPER JUNE 1, 2018 By DAVE FIDLIN Special to the Post MILWAUKEE — As they oper- ate with one less alderman — at least in the short term — the 14 remaining members of the Milwaukee Common Council dis- cussed a series of next steps this week in the hopes legislative issues would continue to be h a n d l e d seamlessly. Alder man Jim Bohl recently an- nounced he was relin- quishing his a l d e r m a n i c post, though he will con- tinue to work out of City Hall. Mayor Tom Barrett last week announced Bohl was named the city's legislative fiscal manager in the city's office of intergovern- mental relations. Bohl's departure, which took effect May 24, has set in motion a timeline for filling his now-vacant District 5 seat on the council. At a meeting Wednesday, alder- men also discussed an interim plan to absorb Bohl's responsibili- ties. Council President Ashanti Hamilton praised Bohl for his time on the council, which spanned 18 years. "The void is something that the entire council is going to feel," Hamilton said. "I'll be counting on a number of (aldermen) to step up. This is always a team effort. As we go for- ward, I think it's extremely impor- tant — extremely important — to hone in on that team mentality," he said. Bohl's departure most acutely impacts District 5, which encom- passes portions of the city's northwest side, including sections as far south as Center Street and as far north as Bradley Road. But Hamilton said the absence will be felt across the city. "There's an obligation we have to the entire city," Hamilton said of the need to have other alder- men fill in to absorb some of Bohl's most pressing duties.
