And the sports world has its share. They should be honored, always. Originally called Decoration Day, Memorial Day was established following the Civil War to commem- orate the fallen on both sides of the conflict. It even- tually came to honor all who died in U.S. military service. Most recognizable in modern times is, obviously, Pat Tillman, who played safety for the Arizona Car- dinals from 1998 until the end of the 2001 season. Tillman and his brother Kevin, who gave up a shot at a baseball career, both joined the U.S. Army in 2002 and served in Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003. After being redeployed to Afghanistan, Tillman was killed by friendly fire in 2004 at age 27. The contro- versy surrounding his death goes on today. There are other fallen military athletes from previ- ous generations. In fact, every time you watch Army, Navy or Air Force in a college contest you can bet that someone on that field or on the court will one day fall in the line of duty. Army quarterback Don Holleder looked promising enough to be drafted by the New York Giants in 1956. Holleder, however, stayed in the Army and was killed in Vietnam in 1967. Buffalo Bills guard Bob Kalsu and former Cleveland Browns offensive lineman Don Steinbrunner are two other athletes who died in Vietnam. A search of Korean War casualties turns up Bob Neighbors, a one-time shortstop for the St. Louis Browns who was killed in action in 1952. Both World Wars claimed their share of notable athletes. The "Great War" took the lives of baseball's Eddie Grant, once an infielder for the New York Gi- ants and other teams, and Princeton hockey and foot- ball standout Hobey Baker. They both died in France near the end of that war. Among World War II losses are football players Al Blozis and Jack Lummus, both of the New York Giants, and Nile Kinnick, an Iowa running back who won the Heisman Trophy in 1939. Baseball's Harry O'Neill, a catcher for the Philadelphia Athletics, was killed fighting in Iwo Jima in 1945. Minor league pitcher Joe Pinder was killed during the D-Day in- vasion on June 6, 1944, and Washington Senators outfielder Elmer Gedeon was shot down over France days after his 27th birthday that same year. Enjoy your barbecues, friends, family and even your sports this Memorial Day weekend. However, let those hometown parades and the TV specials remind you of all those who gave their lives in the line of duty so the rest of us may enjoy such pleasures.
