Variety is the "Herbs" of Life at the annual Ozaukee Master Gardener plant and herb sale MEQUON — Things will be "hopping" at this year's Ozaukee Master Gardener Heirloom Plant & Herb Sale to be held Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at the Field House at Concordia University Wisconsin, 12800 N. Lake Shore Drive in Mequon. Among the regular line up of tomatoes (30 varieties), peppers (17 varieties),and basil (20 varieties) will be the herb of the year, hops. Shoppers can select from Cascade, Golden and Nugget or pick up a few of each. Hops are easy to grow, and in addition to adding flavor to beer, hops are used in teas, sachets, bath salts, soaps and floral arrangements. Shoppers from all over Wisconsin and northern Illinois come to the sale for the variety of plants. Most garden stores have one or two kinds of bee balm; at the sale there will be seven varieties ranging in color from purple to violet, coral to scarlet., as well as seven varieties of cone flowers, nine different scented geraniums and 13 varieties of thyme. Whether a container gardener or urban gardener, shoppers will enjoy more than 100 different types of plants including lavender, mint, yarrow, hollyhock, Love in a Mist, golden variegated Hakone Grass and some newcomers, Golden Alexander Zizia and Polar Bear Zinnia. In addition, shoppers are encouraged to stop at the tea table, garden shoppe and bake sale. New this year will be houseplants grown by Master Gardeners and an educational table with information on invasive jumping worms, buckthorn,and garlic mustard.
