A hundred years later, the Society Resource Center has developed an exhibit on World War I to remember and honor the soldiers, nurses and residents of Port Washington who rose to meet the challenge. The War Front talks about the two hundred twenty-six men and women from the City and Township of Port Washington who served in World War I. Of the group, three were nurses Evelyn Smith, Lulu Boerner, and Martha Schumacher. Learn the story about Martha Schumacher's connection to Andrew Van Ells, the namesake of the Port Washington American Legion Post. Learn about Wagoner Pvt. Frederick Boerner and his journey to France and the French villages he passed through as he drove a supply wagon for the 127th Infantry of the 32nd Division. The Home Front describes some of the ways residents supported the troops by knitting socks and sweaters and raising over two million dollars in war bonds in the county. The exhibit contains a wide assortment of uniform items, mementos of service life and the challenges of war. To learn the stories of these young men and women and how the community of Port Washington responded to the outbreak of war, come visit the Society Resource Center at 205 N. Franklin Street. Port Washington's historic Franklin Street is on the National Register for Historic Places and is the heart of the community, with buildings that date to 1852. The Franklin Street Walking Tour focuses on 20 bronze markers set among the sidewalk pavers. Learn about these historic buildings by taking a walk down Franklin Street, using a smart phone to key into the individual markers. Discover Port Washington 100 years after World War I
