OUTDOOR TRUTHS
I'm convinced that most hunters and
fi shermen never contemplate the outdoor
world they take pleasure in. I know in my
own life, that without a concerted effort, I
only enjoy creation without ever giving it much deep thought.
I've especially noticed this truth when I speak to hunters and
fi shermen. It seems their eyes light up when they come to a
realization how nature speaks very loudly about some things
that really matter. And how sometimes we really do not see
the forest for the trees. We would be very shallow people if we
only saw nature as another avenue for our personal pleasure.
The immensity of creation demands we question it. It demands
we understand how our sport only touches the hem of its real
value. Let's face it; we only play on the fringes of all that is out
there. It is enormous. And the more we look, the more we dis-
cover. We have learned in recent years our own galaxy is only
one of about 3000 visible galaxies. It is estimated there are
billions that are yet unseen. To put this in perspective; our Milky
Way is estimated to be about 100,000 light years from one end
to the other. And light travels at 186,000 miles per second. Now
multiply that by billions of galaxies.
And then there's me and you………….
In the scope of the vastness of the universe, we are less than
insignifi cant. In import, we have no bearing on anything. We
are not even a speck on the map. We do not deserve men-
tion. If we are only an evolutionary blip, then what matters? Or
who matters? Or are we all just insignifi cant matter? But what
happens when we add God to matter? It's like adding yeast to
fl our. It makes it rise. It gives it fullness and texture and taste.
The universe, without God, is meaningless and thus so is the
actions of its inhabitants. All that we see and enjoy in nature is
also meaningless without God. That is why it is so important
for those of us who believe in God and who love to hunt and
fi sh; to look more deeply into the God-made things around us
and realize the heavens declare the glory of God into our lives
each day.

SPORTS SPORTS
High School Baseball
R-S Central baseball has won eight
playoff games in the last calendar year after
defeating West Iredell in round one and
Anson 4-1 in the second round.
Central played a very tough Ledford team
on Tuesday and if they advance will likely
play North Davidson at home Friday at 7pm.
East Rutherford's season came to an end
as Franklin beat them on the road 4-3. It was
an up and down season all year as they won
14 games, but lost by errors in round one.
That isn't typical Cavalier baseball. Still, East
Rutherford is a threat ever time they step on
the fi eld.
High School Girls Soccer
R-S Central's soccer team was still alive,
but had to travel up 64 to Hendersonville to
take on one of best clubs in the state. R-S
can score and are not bad defensively, but
likely face the toughest matchup of the
season. They lost to Hendy 3-1 earlier in
the season. Central would likely go to Lake
Norman Charter if they won on Friday.
Thomas Jefferson won a fi rst round
game against East Surry 2-1, but lost in the
second round to Murphy. The Lady Gryphons
program was the fi rst to ever win a playoff
game in school history and still have the most
playoffs victories in school history. All 15 in
the last 9 years.
High School Softball
All three county high school softball teams
are out of the playoffs by the end of round
two.
R-S Central, who won the conference
handily picked up an 8-1 win in the fi rst
round, but lost 3-1 to North Davidson in the
second. It's sad because one of the better
pitchers in the state in Hailey White played
her last softball game. Eight others also
played in their last game as well such as
Brooke Vance, Madison Crain, Holly Newton,
Taylor Stofer and maybe the most improved
this season in Haley Wilson.
East Rutherford was stunned at home in
being shutout by South Rowan. The good
news is that everyone returns to the diamond
again next year.
Chase ended up with a bad draw and
got R-S Central during the fi rst round of the
playoffs. They ended the season with an
8-1 loss. They had three key seniors in Sam
Craft, Ciera Hardin and Makayla Gordon
which sadly ended their high school careers
as well. However, they did win 16 games this
season.
NASCAR
Kevin Harvick won again, but he ran
second for most of the night. For some
reason, Kansas is a little bit weird. It was a
quiet night, but a few wrecks towards the end
helped Harvick out. There were times where
Ryan Blaney, Kyle Larson and Martin Truex
Jr. were on the way to victory, but all three ran
into issues down the stretch. How many more
races is Harvick going to win this season? He
has 5 wins in 12 starts so far this season.
And fi nally, this past week, Shelby Star
Sports Editor and legendary media man
in the Carolinas, Alan Ford...retired. I have
known Alan for years and the one thing I
will say is that he was genuine. He's very
well respected and if he never thought that,
I hope maybe this little piece writing will help
him understand.
Honestly, I have been in the business for
15-plus years and I am not even close to the
same class of well-respected writers that he
is in.
He always was straight-forward with me.
He did ask coaches tough questions, but tried
to be nice about it. I have a ton of respect for
the guy. He could tell you countless stories
of his years covering sports as a nearly 40
year run came to an end. I learned some
things from him just by watching him work
and how he interacted with people. He comes
from the old school of writing and there are
some things I have learned off him as well.
So, congrats to you, Alan. Cleveland County
games won't be quite the same without you.
