On May 3 and 4, seniors across Rutherford County Schools celebrated National College Signing Day. This nationwide event, part of Michelle Obama's "Reach Higher" campaign, honors student success and is meant to emulate the celebrations surrounding student-athletes making their collegiate commitments. Within Rutherford County Schools, the event was sponsored by the Davidson College Advising Corps and the Robert and Janice McNair Educational Foundation. Between the three traditional high schools – CHASE, East Rutherford and R-S Central – nearly 350 seniors signed commitment certifi cates to 57 different colleges, demonstrating their drive to continue their education beyond high school. The seniors were all joined by their principals in signing their "letters of intent." After signing, the groups took part in ice cream parties, raffl es and more fun, all organized by the Davidson Advising Corps College Advisors at their respective schools. "While obtaining higher education - whether that be from a university, a technical school, etc. - has become more of a norm, it is still an incredible accomplishment. We want to provide opportunities for our students to refl ect on their hard work and be proud of the futures they have created by committing to a plan for post-secondary education," said Thomas Hall, College Advisor at R-S Central High School. "National College Signing Day is an important step for seniors. It is a rite of passage moment that acknowledges their accomplishments and generates even more excitement for their next steps," Matt McSwain, McNair Foundation Academic Programs Specialist, stated. Signing day photos from all schools are available at facebook.com/mcnairedfoundation.
