The county hosts no less than half a dozen festivals each year, and between festivals, visitors can check out some local attractions. There are plenty of hidden marvels to discover, one-of-a-kind restau- rants, and quaint shops awaiting you in your search for fun and relaxation. VISITORS CENTER Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana Indiana's manufacturing heritage is celebrated at Toyota Motor Manufacturing's Visitors Center, which will host its 10,000th guest this year to see a working automotive plant. Completely handicap accessible, visi - tors can follow a vehicle from headlight to rear bumper around the plant, as well as see the museum at the entrance area. Indiana loves automobiles, from the Indy 500 to the local racetrack. Admission is free, but hours vary, so look online at www.tourtoyotaindi - ana.com for more information. PRINCETON DEPOT The county's only remaining train depot, Princeton Depot features a railway museum and a restored train caboose. Stop at the depot first, since, as home to the Gibson County Visitors Center, it offers a wealth of tour and special event informa- tion. QUILT TRAIL Gibson County has joined the quilt block trail. Grab a map at the Princeton Depot, a historic stop in its own right, and the head- quarters of the county's Visitors and Tour- ism Dept., then enjoy following the blocks around the highways and scenic routes of the county. A quilt block quest is a relaxing way to spend a day in Gibson County and get to know the area. Visit www.gibson- countyin.org for maps and more informa- tion about the trail. LYLES STATION Historic School & Museum Lyles Station Historic School and Mu- seum is one of the last remaining A frican- American settlements in the Hoosier state, established by free black men in the 1800s, and will celebrate its 20 -year anniversary as an area attraction this year. Located west of Princeton, the Heritage Classroom provides students the opportunity to expe- rience a day in the life of school children in the early 1900s, and the museum also has early farming equipment, a period garden and special events that show early Ameri- can life. Go online at www.lylesstation.org for more information. COUNTY COURTHOUSE Just a few blocks down from the Prince- ton Depot is the most significant historical structure in the county. If the courthouse looks familiar, that's because it was used as the model for the Dept. 56 Original Snow Village Courthouse. Visitors can relax in the gazebo on the courthouse lawn, browse the memorials around the perimeter, and walk across the street to access all the shops around the Princeton square. Prince- ton's downtown organization hosts frequent events at the courthouse square, too. NEW GENERATION DAIRY FARM March through October, New Genera- tion Dairy Farm's 80 -acre operation in Owensville takes visitors through milking from farm to the dinner table. Presently, the dairy milks more than 1,200 Holsteins, three times a day. For tours, call 812-729 - 7300. FAIRGROUNDS The Gibson County Fairgrounds host festi- vals, concerts, tractor pulls and horse shows throughout the year, besides the Gibson County 4-H Fair, a full week of entertainment. HOPKINS FAMILY PARK The Hopkins family recently donated a large tract of scenic farmland to be converted into a public park. Just off the Princeton I-69 exit at the intersection of County Roads 250 South and 750 East, the Hopkins park is still a work in progress, but several features are already finished and open for free to all visitors. COCKRUM HALL Visit James Cockrum's Oakland City home, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. Born in 1799 in North Carolina, Cockrum and his son, William Monroe Cockrum, shielded enslaved Blacks seeking freedom along the Under- ground Railroad. Cockrum's home was restored in 2002 and is located on the Oak- land City University campus, at 38 Lucretia Street, Oakland City. For more information, call 812-749 -1228. COVERED BRIDGES Bridge enthusiasts can explore the 1875 - era Red Bridge over Big Bayou Creek in southern Gibson County and The Wheel- ing Bridge, which crosses the Patoka River, northeast of Princeton. Built in 1877, the Wheeling Bridge has been featured on everything from lighters and Swiss-army knives to paintings, local historians say.
