BACKYARD ADVENTURES 2018 PIKE PUBLISHING 3B for almost the full season, many families come and do dinner at the track, which also has local flavor. Loris makes and sells Dewig Meats cheeseburg- ers, which are hamburgers raised, aged and cut locally by another family business. They say they try to keep concessions and novelties affordable, and don't charge for camping, which means from large RVs to the occasional pup tents, people often stay until morning. "They come early, sometimes as early as 11 a.m., and they stay late. It's a different atmosphere that's maybe hard to explain to a stick and ball person," Tom said. "But it's a pretty important part of Indiana." In fact, Indiana is a perfect storm of factors that create great racing, Tom said. First, there's the Indy 500, which has a strong fan base, then there is a strong auto manufactur- ing industry that creates a pool of people with better-than-average car knowledge. "It's a big part of Indiana's economy," Tom said. While running a track has its challenges, the Helfrich family is bringing up the next genera- tion of racetrack owners, though that's far in the future, and they're continuing to make improve- ments, to keep the place feeling clean and secure. Of course, there's always concern about the 'r' word — in racing circles they never say "rain" — but the weather will hopefully cooperate for another summer of high intensity, short tracks, the fan families that experience the race and the Helfrichs who host them. "What keeps this track alive is our family," Tom said. For the most current information, see Facebook.com/TriStateSpeedwayHaubstadt. Live Music & INFLATABLES Every Day!
