The 1980s-set comedy wraps up its fifth season on Wednesday, May 16, on ABC. Based on the life of creator Adam F. Goldberg, the family sitcom de- tails the lives of members of the Goldberg clan of Jenkintown, Pennsylvania. The trio of Goldberg kids is pre- sided over by mother Beverly and father Murray, portrayed by famil- iar faces Wendi McLendon-Covey ("Bridesmaids," 2011) and Jeff Garlin ("Curb Your Enthusiasm"). Daughter Erica (Hayley Orrantia, "Roommates") has spent the fifth season on the journey of her first year at college, while Adam (Sean Giambrone, "Clarence") and Barry (Troy Gentile, "Drillbit Taylor," 2008), the boys of the family, have navigated high school together. Legendary actor George Segal ("Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" 1966) shows his comedic exper- tise as Pops, grandfather to Adam and his siblings. Fans of "The Goldbergs" need not worry about losing for good the nostalgic content that helps make the show so popular. The se- ries has already been renewed for a sixth season, so the upcoming fi- nale will be far from the last time the goofy family will grace TV screens. In addition to the renewal of "The Goldbergs," a spinoff of the series set in the 1990s and set at William Penn Academy has been ordered to series on ABC af- ter the well-received pilot special aired in January. The new series will feature Tim Meadows ("Satur- day Night Live") and Bryan Callen ("Kingdom") as the leads. The success of the series is in part due to the exceptional perfor- mances from the cast, including McLendon-Covey, who has been nominated for two Critics Choice Television Awards for her work in the show as Beverly. Ever commit- ted to her role, the actress recently arrived at a Deadline panel in full character, taking questions on top- ics ranging from parenting to her obsession with first lady Nancy Reagan. An accomplished recording art- ist broke out amongst the actors in an unforgettable season 3 mo- ment. Orrantia's Erica performed a cover of the band Rush's song "Tom Sawyer," proving that the cast of "The Goldbergs" is truly multitalented.
