PLU #38 6/ $ 5 Assorted 50ml Liqours BUSINESS By ALEX NEMEC Conley News Service MILWAUKEE — Wisconsin's tourism economy topped $20.6 billion in 2017, which was a $631 million increase from 2016. Wisconsin's direct visitor spending reached $12.7 billion, a 3.17 percent increase from 2016. The announcement came in a press release from Gov. Scott Walker's office as he travels around the state for National Travel and Tourism Week through Saturday. "Wisconsin's travel and hospitality indus- try is booming," Walker said in the release. "Our tourism industry continues to be cru- cial to our state and is consistently a top per- forming sector of our economy." Waukesha, Ozaukee, Washington and Milwaukee counties combined to increase direct visitor spending by $94.1 million or 9.18 percent from 2016. Milwaukee County had the greatest increase of $59.4 million among the counties, but Waukesha County had the greatest per- centage increase from 2016 at 4.4 percent. Washington County experienced a $1.7 mil- lion increase, which resulted in a 1.46 per- cent increase from 2016, while Ozaukee County experienced a $300,000 increase, which resulted in a 0.25 percent increase, respectively. According to the Department of Tourism, visitation in Wisconsin reached 110 million and has grown between 2.0 percent and 2.8 percent over the past four years. Of Wisconsin's $12.7 billion increase in direct visitor spending, 53 percent of it came from lodging and the food and beverage industry. Lodging brought in $3.4 billion, while food and beverage was close behind at $3.3 billion. Tourism Secretary Stephanie Klett said Wisconsin's tourism industry has had a pos- itive impact on the economy and job growth for seven years in a row. "Research shows us that the increased investment in marketing the brand of fun positively influences the way people think about Wisconsin as a top place to vacation, work, live, attend college, and own a second home," Klett said. State tourism economy tops $20.6 billion in 2017 Lowlands Group hires James Beard-nominated chef MILWAUKEE — The Lowlands Group announced it has hired Thomas Hauck to lead the group's culinary program and oversee the menus of its four concepts, which include Café Hollander, Café Benelux, Café Centraal and Café Bavaria. Hauck most recently owned and operated c.1880 in Milwaukee's Walker's Point neigh- borhood before closing the restaurant April 28. Hauck operated c.1880 for over six years and earned numerous accolades, including nominations for the James Beard Foundation award in the "Best Chef: Midwest" category. "We totally respect everything he's done to elevate Milwaukee's dining scene over the past few years and hope his creativity and high standards have an even broader reach through joining Lowlands," said Dan Herwig, director of brand and marketing at the Lowlands Group. Hauck will spend his first few months learning the group's culture, developing relationships with the culinary staff and conducting research for upcoming menus, which will include a trip to Belgium and the Netherlands in September. Kohl's to again partner with Wisconsin State Fair WEST ALLIS — The Wisconsin State Fair, in collaboration with the Wisconsin State Fair Park Foundation and Kohl's, announced the eighth year of the partner- ship to allow families admission deals for the annual fair, which is Aug. 2-12. Kohl's Family Value Day is 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Aug. 6. It will include free admission for vis- itors 11 and younger, normally $8, and dis- counted admission for $6, normally $14. The partnership also includes the return of the Kohl's Activity Zone, which includes hand-on educational activities throughout the fair. West Bend Mutual receives awards WEST BEND — West Bend Mutual Insurance Co. has been given two awards — one related to ethics and another to arts involvement. The West Bend-based company was one of 10 companies nationally to be honored by the Americans for the Arts for its involve- ment with the arts "that enriches the work- place, education and the community. Winners of the award set the standard for excellence and serve as role model for oth- ers to follow." West Bend Mutual was one of seven Wisconsin companies to receive the Torch Award for Ethics by the Better Business Bureau. Hauck
