TV Media Weekly | May 5 - 11, 2018 By Adam Thomlison TV Media Q: I am a big fan of "Cold Jus- tice" and was happy to hear that Oxygen had picked up the series. I am unhappy, though, that so far the station has just been airing reruns, with an oc- casional new show. I know it stopped airing initially due to a lawsuit. What's the deal now? A: There are a couple of "deals" going on with "Cold Justice's" new place on Oxygen, but neither is anything to worry about — the show's in good shape. Your point about only getting "occasional" new episodes is a fair one — Oxygen is airing it on a somewhat more irregular schedule than it had on TNT, its previous channel, sometimes letting weeks pass between episodes. It's also airing fewer of them. TNT aired three seasons of the show before canceling it in 2015, and the third season was a whop- ping 24 episodes long. The show's fourth season, which aired last summer on Oxygen, had just 10 episodes. You shouldn't take that as a lack of commitment from the network, however. Kelly Siegler, the crusad- ing former prosecutor who is the star of the show, announced back in February that she was "hard at work" on new episodes for a fifth season. Q: Can you tell me what's go- ing on with "Shades of Blue"? A: Surprisingly, I can, but once I do, you might wish I didn't. In a somewhat rare move, NBC officially announced the cancella- tion of "Shades of Blue," which stars pop star Jennifer Lopez. Usually a network would simply not renew the show and leave fans wondering, so this is techni- cally a kindness. However, it came with a more unambiguous bit of good news, too: there's still one season left of the show. It premieres in June. Together, these things likely add up to a conclusive ending to the show. If the network is an- nouncing the cancellation already, it likely told the writers about it even earlier, so that they'd be able to write an end to the story of this tight-knit family of Brooklyn cops, centered around Lopez's dedicat- ed detective and single mom, Har- lee Santos. Indeed, Lopez herself gave an enigmatic hint about that ending in an official news release. "We crafted a poetic three- season arc on how her journey ends, which is true redemption. The way only Harlee could have done it — the hard way, the road less traveled." Have a question? Email us at questions@tvtabloid.com. Please include your name and town. The first weeknight is all about baking on the culinary channel, and things get even sweeter with yet another baking show added to the mix starting Monday, May 7. That night sees "Best Baker in America" return for a second season with a new host, new bakers and new recipes over which the contestants must prove their mastery. Regular "Chopped" judge Scott Conant takes over hosting duties from last season's Adam Rapoport (editor of Bon Appétit magazine) this time around, lend- ing his typically knowledgeable and witty observations to the tasks set before the bakers. He's joined by returning judges Jason Smith and Marcela Valladolid, both of whom certainly know their way around a kitchen full of sweets. Unlike similar baking competi- tions, such as British import "The Great British Baking Show," "Best Baker in America" isn't out to find the best amateur baker. This show is looking for the best professional from among its contestants, and because of that, this series has no qualms about throwing some re- ally tricky tasks at the group. With nine contestants this time around, the judges have come up with some challenges that will re- ally test their inventiveness and baking expertise. There are old school favorites, such as decadent Mont Blanc and sumptuous char- lotte royale, to be baked, along with tricky treats that really test the bakers' techniques and atten- tion to detail, such as petits fours and layered French meringue cakes. The May 7 premiere is all about cakes, something that should be so easy to a professional baker that nothing could possibly go wrong ... right? Even if everything does go according to plan, one baker will be sent home, putting the rest of the contestants just one step closer to the coveted Best Baker title. It all sounds so mouthwatering, and the rotating guest judges are the lucky ones who get to join in on the tasting. Acclaimed bakers Zac Young, Shinmin Li, Sherry Yard and Florian Bellanger all take a turn at tasting, along with baking digital influencers Joshua John Russell, Yolanda Gampp and Gemma Stafford. "Best Baker in America" joins Food Network's Monday night baking bloc on May 7.
