The death of a loved one, a shocking revelation about a family member or even a rapidly changing neighborhood can do it in a flash, but when all three of those influences happen at once, it's definitely a recipe for some juicy storytelling. Enter "Vida," a new half-hour drama that premieres on Starz on Sunday, May 6. In a landscape of hour-long dramas, the bite-sized pieces that the new series comes in could bring a breath of fresh air to a genre steeped in — well, drama. Mishel Prada and Melissa Bar- rera lead the cast as a pair of es- tranged sisters brought back into each other's life by their mother's tragic death. Both ac- tresses are relatively new faces: "The Walking Dead" fans may recognize the former as one of the stars of former web series "Fear the Walking Dead: Pas- sage," and Barrera's credits in- clude Mexican telenovellas "Siempre Tuya Acapulco" and "Tanto Amor." The two estranged sisters, re- turning to their childhood home on the east side of Los Angeles, find the world they once knew chang- ing rapidly. Not only is their mother gone, but when they meet her longtime "roommate," Eddy (Ser Anzoategui, "East Los High"), they discover that there was a side of their mom that they never even suspected. Set against the backdrop of a rapidly gentrifying neighborhood and its long-established Hispanic population's resistance to change, "Vida" is an exploration and a cel- ebration of the rejection of the ste- reotypes that exist about any com- munity. In an age when there's no shortage of hour-long dramas, "Vida" is a 30-minute treat with a strong social message and a voice that refuses to be silenced. The new series premieres Sunday, May 6, on Starz. Regal retrospective: With only days to go until what will no doubt be the most buzzed-about wedding in a long time, interest in former "Suits" star Meghan Mar- kle's marriage to Prince Harry is at an all-time high. Despite their dis- tance across the Atlantic, many people on this side of the pond have a huge fascination with the Royal Family, and the fact that the Prince is marrying an American ac- tress has fanned the flames of fan- dom to a fever pitch.
