The driving force for the one- day fundraising, eat-and-run food challenge is Eat West Allis, a grouping of 22 eateries flung across the city. They have clear concepts, many are unique to the area and often driven by word-of- mouth advertising. "The diversity is neat," Mayor Dan Devine said of the restau- rants, cafés and other food shops popping up in the past few years. "We've got award-winning barbe- cue, the Peruvian place is neat, and our first craft brewery opened a year ago. "The owner is usually sitting back in the kitchen cooking, and it's very personal," he said.
