recently, an old friend stopped by for a
quick visit as he traveled from his childhood
home in upstate new York to his adult home
in northern Virginia.
that's how I seem to get my visitors—
bleary-eyed refugees from the highway—as
most of my family and aging pals live either
north or south of harrisburg.
but that's oK. better to serve as a lunch/
bathroom break than not to serve at all.
he and I grabbed a bite downtown, and he
remarked on how much better harrisburg
looked than his last quick visit about eight
years ago. he also lamented the "ridiculous"
cost of housing in the washington area, and
we both reflected on the time, some 20 years
ago, when D.c. was a reasonably priced place
to put down roots.
that gave me an opening for one of my
favorite topics—how more people should
consider the harrisburg area as an alternative
to the expensive, car-choked metros just to
the south and east. As we strolled along, I told
him the cost of my house, and, as he paused
mid-stride, I thought I'd have to summon 9-1-1
to the corner of 2nd and state.
Perhaps, one day, the lower susquehanna
again will become a choice place to settle.
but, until then, we have the joint largely to
ourselves—the reviving towns and cities,
the countryside, the farms. hmm, maybe we
should keep this just among friends after all.
may is an especially magnificent time in our
area. we finally bid adieu to the lingering
chill and get to enjoy the great outdoors—
whether your best idea is a grand hike or a
coffee al fresco.
springtime also is when the fields turn
green, which means it's time for our annual
dining and food focus. the harrisburg area
is rich in great dining options: casual, upscale
and everything in between. A warm night, a
bottle of wine, a table on the street—yeah,
I'm glad I found my way here.
