The Daily Star, Oneonta, N.Y., Friday, April 27, 2018 20 By Francis Babin TV Media Sci-fi phenom: Last year, AMC announced it was go- ing to expand its ever-grow- ing slate of non-fiction series with an ambitious plan to produce a year-round docu- mentary series entitled "AMC Visionaries." With the help of influential artists the likes of Eli Roth ("Hostel, 2005") and The Roots' Questlove, the history of pop culture genres such as rap, horror and video games would be profiled. The first of these docu-se- ries, "Robert Kirkman's Se- cret History of Comics," pre- miered last fall to great re- views and on Monday, April 30, comes the second install- ment: "James Cameron's Story of Science Fiction." Few names are as synony- mous with science fiction as James Cameron. The Academy Award-winning genius respon- sible for the two highest-gross- ing films of all time ("Avatar," 2009 and "Titanic," 1997) has given us amazing and influen- tial sci-fi movies throughout the decades with "The Termi- nator" (1984), "Aliens" (1986), "The Abyss" (1989) and "Ter- minator 2: Judgment Day" (1991), to name a few. Over the course of six hour-long episodes, the leg- endary writer-director-pro- ducer aims to explore sci- ence fiction's evolution from a cult, niche genre with pulp origins to the blockbuster pop culture phenomenon that currently dominates the entertainment landscape.
