OUTDOOR TRUTHS There's nothing like fi shing this time of year. The mornings are cool, the eve- nings are warm, and the fi shing can be good most of the day. While most fi sher- men still prefer to arrive at daylight, some of the best fi shing will actually be up in the morning as the sun comes up and warms the water. This really allows more opportunities to hitch up the boat and head to the lake or river. These next 6 weeks will be a fi sherman's paradise. I love this time of year. What I have no- ticed over time is that I must watch becoming so set in my ways that I am unwilling to adapt and change. For instance, I know these mid-mornings are perhaps the best time to catch fi sh, but I still plan my quick trips around being in the water at day- light. The problem is that by 11:00 a.m. I'm rushing to get back home and idling by some of the best fi shing spots. Why didn't I just get a few more things done before I left and arrived at the river at 9 instead of 6? This also goes for deer hunting. I know ad nauseam that when the moon is full the deer travel around noon. But for some reason I still arrive before dawn and have a hard time staying in the stand until 10:30. Why can't I learn and adapt. I think it is because these times only come around once a month and even then it doesn't matter unless we are in a particular hunting or fi shing season. As a result I just do what I have always done and get the same bad results and then beat myself up because I know better. There are times in each year that are more productive than others. Whether it's fi shing or hunting, some times of the year are better than oth- ers and some hours during those times are also better as well. It doesn't matter how excited I may get or how much I think this day will be different, or how much I think I have fi gured out a new way. Some things and some times are more productive and I would be served well to change my actions instead of following my own hype concerning how I may have beaten the odds one time 20 years ago. I sometimes get tired of hearing people talk about the good old days, especially when they talk about religion. To be hon- est, I think we talk about the "old time religion" ad nauseam as well, as if God can't keep up with the times and as if we need to go back to get God's best. There's a Greek word for that – malarkey! I really don't want the old-time religion. I want to be a part of what God is doing today. Please don't put words in my mouth; I do believe the Bible is Holy Spirit inspired and without error, but I also believe that God is not an antiquated piece of furniture where we are always exclaiming "they don't make furniture like that anymore." The truth is, they do make good furniture today and God is still relevant, contemporary, and as fresh as tomorrows headlines. What we need to do is realize that God may have shown up at dawn 30 years ago but He may be showing up at mid-morning now. We can bemoan the past and long for Him to return at dawn or we can decide to put our boat in at a different time – at the place He is working today. They have won fi ve in a row, but suffered a tough loss as Jake Laughter broke his foot last week. Congrats to the Hilltoppers on the regular season title and although Laughter is lost for the season, best of luck in a speedy recovery. East Rutherford (12-8, 7-6) They lost twice last week, which stopped a streak of nine straight wins. They end the week with East Gaston at home before next week's conference tourney at Shelby. They will fi nish no worse than third in the conference, but still could fi nd second with two straight wins and South Point losing twice. Softball R-S Central (15-3, 12-1) Congrats to the Lady Hilltoppers who won the regular season Southwestern 2A title! They have won 9 of the last 10 and play Chase this coming week. Both East Rutherford (13-6, 9-4) and Chase (13-5, 9-4) are tied for second in the league and it comes down to these last two games. The tiebreaker belongs to Chase since they won twice. Girls Soccer R-S Central (11-3, 5-1) The Lady Hilltoppers have won four in a row and are now tied for fi rst place. They have fi ve games left with a meeting in South Point to likely determine the conference title this week. Thomas Jefferson (10-5-1, 10- 3) Confi dence is also building in Avondale. The ladies have won six straight and could complete the regular season with an eight game win streak that I had spoke of four weeks ago if they should beat Piedmont Community twice this coming week. NASCAR The year started off all Kevin Harvick and now the last three weeks, it's been all Kyle Busch. Busch has only one fi nish outside the top ten all year so far. I guess losing to Truex last year really put a fi re under these guys because everything seems to be falling their way now. Talladega is this weekend and picking a winner is the hardest to do at a plate track. Ricky Stenhouse and Brad Keselowski have been tough to beat lately at plate tracks.
