The Greater Milwaukee Association of Realtors with Mike Ruzicka, president of GMAR, hosted a news conference Wednesday to recognize the brave men and women who protested for fair housing in Milwaukee. "Their protests weren't welcome. They were protesting things many people didn't want to change," said Ashanti Hamilton, Common Council president. "I have to recognize Vel Phillips because for years she was the only one who voted for this legislation." Beginning on Aug. 28, 1967, The NAACP Youth Council, the Commandos, Alderwoman Phillips, Father James Groppi and many com- munity leaders marched over the the 16th Street viaduct, the bridge that stretched across the pre- dominantly black North Side of the city to the overwhelmingly white South Side, facing the wrath of hostile crowds of whites hurling insults and rocks at the protesters marching for fair housing rights in the city. The fair housing marches continued for 200 days.
