A hot or cold start can have lasting implications that, come September, can make a world of differ- ence. The last thing the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants want to do is fall behind one another in the NL West. They wrap up a four-game, season-opening series April 1 on ESPN. The Dodgers, of course, are just a near miss from being the 2017 World Series Champion, and now they have to fig- ure out a way to get back there. They've got the lineup to do it on both sides of the ball. We all know about Clayton Kershaw on the mound and after last season, we also know about Cody Bellinger at the plate. Winning the West will still be a challenge for the Dodgers – partially because the Giants, who were plagued by injuries last season, are reloaded and ready to get back on the winning track that netted them three World Series rings since 2010. Madison Bumgarner and Johnny Cueto are as tough as any on the mound and they're backed up now by off-season acquisi- tions Andrew McCutchen and Evan Longoria, who both have solid defensive and offensive skills. The Giants could be scar y, but Arizona and Colorado, who both made the playoffs last year, will be tough in that division too. Over in the NL East the New York Mets and Washington Na- tionals should duke it out, but don't overlook an Atlanta Braves squad with some fine young players. Fans keep waiting for the Nationals pitching staff to toss them into the World Series, and while it should happen, it hasn't yet. The Mets, meanwhile, brought back Jay Bruce and signed Todd Frazier to shore up their lineup, but all eyes will be on their pitching staff, espe- cially Noah Syndergaard, who only pitched 30 innings last season. And in the Central, baseball experts are ready to hand the division to the Chicago Cubs, and if they stay healthy, that could be the case. But their Route 66 rival the St. Louis Cardi- nals are ready to crash the party. The acquisition of outfielder Marcell Ozuna in the Miami Marlins fire sale could be just the ticket. This is a team that is not used to losing and will do what it has to in acquiring good players. The dark horse in the Cen- tral could be the Milwaukee Brewers, who have looked real good at times over the past two seasons and appear ready to contend. They too got some help from Miami in acquiring out- fielder Christian Yelich. A heck of a National Lea gue season should lie ahead.
