In seattle, Amazon.com recently opened a
highly automated supermarket, something
of a cross between your standard giant and
an automat (anyone remember those?).
You grab a bag, fill it up and exit without
engaging another human. through some
digital wizardry, prices ring up automatically
and, minutes after leaving, you get an email
or text with your invoice. there is essentially
no personal interaction.
contrast that with my recent, mid-afternoon
trip to a coffee shop in harrisburg.
I walked in, and a customer was chatting
up the barista, asking him about a visit to
baltimore. they knew one another, and
I knew them. the barista also knew my
name and my regular order. we talked for
a minute, wished one another well and said
we'd see each other tomorrow—a brief, but
meaningful exchange.
I have similarly personal experiences each
weekend at the broad street market, at
sandwich shops near my office, at Zeroday
for a beer. those encounters have led to
dinners, to dates, to deals and to lasting
friendships.
As technology continues to drive us apart,
the city naturally does the opposite—it brings
us together. ultimately, cities may be the best
antidote to technology run amok, as they
facilitate connections naturally, without the
need for a tiny screen and streams of data.
I recently listened to a teD talk by robert
Putnam, the author "bowling Alone," a
seminal work on our growing social isolation.
he said that, since he published his book
18 years ago, the situation has only grown
worse, with technology (no longer cars and
tV) driving our seclusion and making us less
happy as a people.
but we're only passive victims of technology
if we choose to be. A good remedy is to spend
time in your city, hitting the flea market, the
ballgame, the brewery, the brunch spot, the
river walk, especially as the weather warms up.
this month's issue of theburg has hundreds
of ideas for things to do and ways to connect
with one another in and around your city.
grab a copy, be happy. And you don't even
need good wi-Fi.
