The ceremony took place March 12 at the city's Fire Department headquarters. South Milwaukee Fire Chief Joseph Knitter, who has worked for the department for about 40 years, said women have been working as firefighters in the area for quite a while. "While it is a historic moment for our fire department, it isn't new for the fire service," said Knitter, who became the city's fire chief in 2012. He added that the department has had female on-call firefighters in the past. However, LaVigne is the first woman to meet all the stringent requirements for the South Milwaukee's first female firefighter found calling at veterinary office See FIREFIGHTER on Page 15 Shardae LaVigne juggled being mom, school and work to get job Local news at your fingertips Visit www.gmtoday.com Like us on Facebook: www.facebook.com/MilwaukeePost Submitted photo Shardae LaVigne of Greenfield shakes the hand of South Milwaukee Fire Chief Joseph Knitter during her swearing-in ceremony March 12, becoming South Milwaukee's first full-time female firefighter.
