Extreme Tour), the terrain of these
northern New Jersey counties means
a fair amount of large hills to climb.
Not a cyclist, I casually trained for
my mere eighteen miles by practicing
on local hills in Monmouth County.
Even so, I ended up walking uphill on
two occasions, and I was far from the
only one who had to dismount. But
with four farm stops along the way
to drink water, go to the bathroom,
visit with farm animals, buy fresh
produce, and loll in the warm grass
amongst beautiful countryside, it was
well worth it and a wonderful way
to share my father's passion for long
distance cycling without getting in
over my head.

Above: Specialty bike tours, like this one
offered by Pour and Pedal, are a great
combination of fun and fitness.
Right: Cyclists enjoying samples at Laurita
Winery in New Egypt. They begin at Cream
Ridge Winery with a visit to the vineyard and
tank room, all while tasting unique fruit wines.
After peddling eight scenic miles to Laurita,
participants enjoy a picnic lunch in stunning
countryside while sampling yet more wine.
