OUTDOOR TRUTHS Some of my most vivid memories come from the days of being on the lake. I can remember catching stripe bass as fast as I could cast but I can also remember being scared to death because I had not left early enough to beat the lightning storm. It seems we always think there's enough time for one more cast. As I got older I began to value my life more. Now if there's a storm within a hundred miles, I leave. There's just something about holding a graphite rod in my hand in the middle of a lake that doesn't sit well with me. Most of my memories, however, are good. They include days on a bass boat, a pontoon, and even wading. What all of them have in common is that the greatest moments were shared with a friend. It was with these friends that I learned to eat potted meat, Vienna Sausage and Beanie Weenies. This is stuff we never eat any other time. I have learned, if you're fi shing with a friend, it's ok to hold a bologna sandwich with the same hand that just lipped that big bass. (In case you didn't know, there are no germs on the lake.) Yes, friends are what I like about fi shing. I don't have to be anything but who and what I am. All of my life I have heard about the characteristics of God. He has many titles that give evidence of those characteristics. He is known primarily as father. He is called man's deliverer, sustainer, provider, and protector. All of these have special sig- nifi cance for special times in each of our lives. When I'm scared I need him to be my protector. When I'm broke I need him to be my provider. But of all the titles and characteristics of God, my favorite is that he is a friend. And not only a friend but a friend to anyone who wants him to be. When God became fl esh through the person of Jesus, he proved this unique de- sire. Of Jesus, it was written, "He is a friend of sinners." Wow! Not just a friend, but a friend to those who don't measure up to the standards of perfection. Which is me! Which is you! Which is all of us. I hope one of the pictures you have of God is a friend. If it's not, you're going to miss out on a lot of good times and good memories being with someone who accepts you for who you are. Now that basketball is over, it's now onto High School baseball. Don't get me wrong, I am looking forward to college basketball's March Madness and we can talk about that next week. Weather has plagued everyone from playing baseball, but they did get game one of the year in on Friday. R-S Central's softball and baseball teams beat East Rutherford 4-0. I expect all four teams to be competitive if not vie conference championships. R-S Central has South Point on Friday (3/9). Chase beat Shelby 7-6 in the fi rst game of the baseball season, while softball won 11-1. They will be at rival East Rutherford on Friday (3/9). Both Thomas Jefferson Softball and baseball lost to Lincoln Charter in the opener. They host Bessemer City on Friday (3/9). Baseball R-S Central has nine back from last year's 26 win season in Jace Crowe with Cam and Keaton Snethen. East Rutherford has Issac Toney pitching and Josh Searcy bat returning and eight others. Chase has nine returning as well with Chipper McGinnis and Grant Lanser among the top returnees. Softball R-S Central will miss a decent amount of offense from a year ago, but still be pretty good with at least two solid pitchers in a dominant Haley White and backup Madison Crain. Chase has the hitting of Ciera Hardin and Makayla Gordon back with Faith Harrill in the pitching circle. This year, they do have enough returning to make the playoffs again. East Rutherford missed out on the playoffs a season ago, but have Breonna Twitty and Crennan Davis back for infi eld security. NASCAR Kevin Harvick has won two in a row and winning with ease. The Toyota's and Chevy's are still trying to work some things out, but the Ford's have fi gured it out so far. Harvick has never won three Monster Energy Cup races in a row. However, the series heads to Phoenix and he has eight of his 39 career wins there. Underdogs: Aric Almirola nor Clint Bowyer has fi nished worse than 13th in three races. Both are Stewart-Haas owned cars, which are teammates of Kevin Harvick. Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin, Kyle Larson, Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano are not far off. I'm going out on a limb this weekend and saying that Ryan Blaney will win his fi rst race of 2018 with his new team. Harvick could be the sure thing though. Chase Elliott should be a factor too.
