Model 8365 Sometimes it's confusing when trying to select the right shrub for your landscape. They come in three sizes (small, medium and large), flowering or nonflowering, and deciduous or evergreen. If you're replacing one, the process is easy. But if you are starting from scratch, where do you begin? Let's try and change that. Size Let's start with size. ■ Larger shrubs are normally used to frame something, to soften a hard line like the corner of your house or as a focal point in the landscape. Picture the front of your house. It's basi- cally a box. How can you change that? Find a large shrub and plant one on each corner. Now you have framed the front of your house and softened the hard lines of the corner. Large shrubs, especially decorative or flowering, are also used as focal points in the landscape. It's something that draws a person's attention to the area and entices them to explore further. ■ Medium and smaller shrubs are used as fillers or enhancers in the landscape. They help fill larger spaces so you don't have to rely solely on other flowers. This is a great-cost saver as they cover more area. They can also be used to enhance any area. Pick something that flowers or has inter- esting foliage. Usually around the border of the house people will choose one variety just for balance and symmetry, but choose different ones throughout the landscape for diversity and interest. This is not written in stone. Design is per- sonal, so do what works for you. Just keep basic design principles in mind. Flowering or nonflowering? ■ Usually nonflowering shrubs are used as screens or to form borders or barriers around an area. Taller ones, like evergreens, can be used to screen a not-so-pleasant view or to block roaming eyes. Shorter ones are typically used as barriers or borders. Take a hedge, for example. They are normally planted to keep people out or limit access to an area. ■ Flowering shrubs are used to add inter- est through flower color. They can be used anywhere you feel more is needed. Find shrubs that bloom at different times to keep your landscape gleaming through- out the growing season. There are early bloomers like lilacs, forsythia, flowering almonds and double-flowering plums. Mid- spring to early-summer bloomers would include some spirea, ninebarks and wiegelia. Early-summer to late-summer bloomers could include shade hydrangeas, viburnums, spirea, mock orange and poten- tillas. Sun hydrangeas make great late-sum- mer to early-fall bloomers. Deciduous or evergreen? Again, this can be personal since they are both used for many different purposes. ■ If you're looking for screening in win- ter months, as well as summer, evergreens are usually the best choice. They also offer nesting and protection for the birds. ■ Deciduous shrubs are often used to offer winter interest. Harry Lauders walk- ing stick and red twig dogwood are good examples. Nothing says your landscape has to look barren in the winter. These are only general principles, but I hope they will help in your shrub decisions. Remember design is personal, so don't be afraid to think outside the box a little as well. Happy gardening! (Michael Timm is a horticulturalist for Ebert's Greenhouse Village in Ixonia.)
