Ev- ery moment of success and sadness feels as though it can never be paralleled. For many, the high school years are held up on a nostalgic pedestal. For oth- ers, the desire to move on and forget holds far greater sway. Sel- dom do we realize, though, that what may seem like a fleeting de- cision for one of us can have a long-term effect on the life of an- other — and even our own. This week, one man is forced to confront his youthful exploits and learn to master fatherhood while trying to keep his business afloat in "Champions," which premieres Thursday, March 8, on NBC. Champions is a local, indepen- dent gym run by Vince (Anders Holm, "The Mindy Project") and his brother Matthew (Andy Favreau, "The Mick"). Since his high school years, Vince has seen himself as quite the ladies' man, largely oblivious to the realities of his womanizing. Vince's promis- cuous nature makes itself known in a very real way with the return of Priya (Mindy Kaling, "The Min- dy Project") to his life, a former high school flame who comes to see him with a musical theater- adoring surprise: his son, Michael (J.J. Totah, "Spiderman: Home- coming," 2017). Priya's plan is simple enough. For the past 15 years, she and Mi- chael have been living in Cleve- land, but it's becoming all too clear to her that her son longs for the stage and deserves a shot at fame. She wants to share joint custody of Michael with Vince, so that their son can finally experi- ence New York City and pursue his Broadway dreams by attend- ing a respected performing arts school. A reluctant Vince agrees, with both him and his brother opening up their home — and complicating their single lives — in order for Michael to live as a New Yorker and, most important- ly, to develop a relationship be- tween father and son. This series is the second to be created and produced by Kaling, though this time she's spending a little less time in front of the cam- era and a significant amount of time behind the scenes, perfect- ing the inner workings of each episode. Kaling, who rose to prominence in the NBC hit adap- tation of the BBC series "The Of- fice," spent the past five years de- voted to "The Mindy Project."
