Barrett devoted a sizable por- tion of his annual talk to resi- dents, business leaders and others involved in civic life across Milwaukee to the continued meta- morphosis taking place in the city's downtown area. Hundreds of people filled a public gathering space within the newly operational Northwestern Mutual Tower and Commons building, which is one of multiple buildings changing the character- istics of the city skyline. "We in Milwaukee are in the midst of a remarkable era," Barrett said. "Milwaukee is changing, positively and perma- nently, as buildings rise and opportunities grow." Barrett singled out four compa- nies for establishing or relocating all or portions of their businesses to the heart of the city. The list includes the just-announced Foxconn, in addition to such firms as Bader Rutter, BMO and the Hammes Company. Other developments that have been underway in recent years — including construction of the new Milwaukee Bucks arena and the first phase of the streetcar project — are also set to take form down- town as 2018 gets underway.
