According to a news release, the Math Initiative is designed to help students com- plete, in their first year of college, relevant introductory mathematics education that aligns to their program of study and is guaranteed to meet a math requirement for students who transfer within the UW System and remain in the same broad field of study. "This grant allows the UW System to build on work underway to place the right students in the right math courses at the right time," said James P. Henderson, UW System vice president of Academic and Student Affairs, in a statement. "For exam- ple, students in some fields of study will benefit more from an introductory statis- tics or quantitative reasoning course than from a college algebra course designed as a prerequisite for calculus. Instead of default- ing to algebra for all, we must focus on the mathematics knowledge and skills our graduates will need to succeed in their cho- sen fields." The 2015 UW-System Legislated Remedial Course Report gives some insight about how many students took remedial coursework during their first year. The new UW System freshmen enrolling from local high schools and those requiring remedial math (percentage in parentheses): Cudahy — 33 students, 12 (36.4 percent); Franklin — 166, 33 (19.9 percent); Greendale — 102, 8 (7.8 percent); Greenfield — 92, 34 (37 percent); Greenfield's Whitnall — 75, 24 (32 percent); Oak Creek —190, 38 (20 percent); St. Francis — 37, 9 (24.3 percent); South Milwaukee — 66, 16 (22.7 percent); Thomas More in St. Francis — 48, 9 (18.8 percent); Wauwatosa East — 106, 13 (12.3 percent); Wauwatosa West — 110, 17 (15.5 percent); West Allis's Nathan Hale — 114, 47 (41.2 per- cent); West Allis Central — 48, 20 (41.7 per- cent). In some Milwaukee schools, the num- bers even advancing to the UW System were low. In Milwaukee those high school students enrolling in the UW System and those need- ing remedial math were: Alexander Hamilton — 29, 19 (65.5 percent); Bradley Tech — 12, 8 (66.7 percent); Harold S. Vincent — 9, 7 (77.8 percent); James Madison University — 13, 10 (76.9 percent); John Marshall — 12, 7 (58.3 percent); Messmer — 28, 12 (42.9 percent); Milwaukee High School of the Arts — 40, 21 (52.5 per- cent); Milwaukee School of Language — 24, 10 (41.7 percent); Pius XI — 54, 22 (40.7 per- cent); Pulaski — 13, 9 (69.2 percent); Riverside University — 87, 52 (59.8 percent); Ronald W. Reagan College Prep — 56, 24 (42.9 percent); and Rufus King International Baccalaureate — 124, 41 (33.1 percent). The UW System will distribute almost 90 percent of the grant dollars to its institu- tions, with remaining funds being used to provide technical support to the schools and to measure and monitor progress to increase enrollment in math, increase stu- dent success in introductory courses in the first year, ensure that introductory courses can be transferred across the UW System and increase the completion of develop- mental math in the first year of schooling.
