Registered Pharmacist Bob Stresing and the Serv-U Team February is Heart Month Heart disease is the number one killer of women in the United States. As with men, women may experience pain, tightness or discomfort in the chest during a heart attack. But women are somewhat more likely than men to experience some of the other common symptoms, particularly shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting, pain in one or both arms, cold sweats, feeling lightheaded, back or jaw pain, and unexplained fatigue or weakness. For some women, symptoms may be present a month or so before their actual heart attack. If you experience symptoms of a heart attack, call 911 immediately! HEALTH TIP WEEK of the 259047084 Paid Advertisement By DAVE FIDLIN Special to the Post MILWAUKEE — A long- time public health advocate with a lengthy résumé in a variety of settings in Milwaukee this week was named to helm the Milwaukee Health Department on an interim basis. After undergoing an intensive public interview process, aldermen on a 13-1 vote Tuesday appointed Patricia McManus interim health commissioner. She fills a position Bevan Baker vacated nearly a month ago after results revealed the MHD had not properly noti- fied thousands of families of children with elevated lead levels. The appointment of McManus came a day after Mayor Tom Barrett rescinded his nomination of Paul Nannis. Barrett's appointee was given a chilly reception at a Public Safety and Health Committee meeting in late January, and questions arose of how many votes Nannis would receive at the full council level this week. Council President Ashanti Hamilton said he activated rarely used emer- gency powers on Monday — the day Barrett formally withdrew his nomination — in presenting McManus to the full council for con- sideration. Hamilton said he made his recommendation because of robust support across the community and a desire to take leadership on the issue. "If it turns out to be a bad decision, let it be mine," Hamilton said. Most of Hamilton's elected colleagues, includ- ing Alderwoman Chantia Lewis, agreed with his sen- timents. " O v e r w h e l m i n g l y, there's been a groundswell of support," Lewis said. "We have to do this because this is what this communi- ty is asking for." Witkowski's concerns Alderman Terry Witkowski, the dissenter of the appointment, made it clear early in the interview process he would not be favoring McManus for the position. Witkowski said he remains concerned about the status of the city agency. "Recently, the Milwau- kee Health Department has had statistics of a Third- World country," Witkowski s a i d , u s i n g i n f a n t mortali- ty rates as an illustra- tion of h i s s t a t e - ment. B u t t h e state of lead-based infrastructure in older sections of the city, and the impact it is having on children, was front and center in the debate con- cerning the state of the department. McManus, who heads the Black Health Coalition of Wisconsin, said science has revealed lead and its impact on drinking sup- plies is serious. However, limited resources within the MHD may have hin- dered the intensity of that message, she said. For however long she leads the MHD, McManus said she is taking a leave of absence from the Black Health Coalition. She fre- quently pointed out she had no intention of helm- ing the department long term, but is interested McManus named interim health commissioner Volume 24, issue number 6 The Milwaukee Post (ISSN 1544-1776) is published weekly by Conley Media, Milwaukee County 3397 South Howell Ave., Milwaukee, WI 53207 For all departments call: 414-744-6370 News display and advertising FAX: 414-375-7070 Classifieds: 800-762-6219 ext. 5005 Classified Fax: 262-334-6252 For display advertising inquires: 414-744-6370 Barry Richards: Advertising Representative — ext. 13 brichards@conleynet.com Julia LeGath: Advertising Representative — ext. 17 jlegath@conleynet.com Jim Baumgart Advertising Sales Director — 262-513-2621 jbaumgart@conleynet.com For editorial questions: Dan Muckelbauer Editor 262-513-2626 dmuck@conleynet.com POSTMASTER: Send address changes to the Milwaukee Post 3397 S.
