Fr om t he Publ isher A T his time of year gets its nickname from the falling of leaves from trees, but here in Tulare County it also means the time we rediscover and fall back in love with the area in which we live. After a harsh summer of finding shelter from the intense heat, we long for the return of more gentle sunshine before the cold of winter hardens the weather again. Long walks, family portraits and hometown contests get us outside of our homes where we reconnect with faces and places. It is the not the busyness of spring but the easiness of autumn when we stop and take a moment to appreciate the grandeur of the land and the closeness of the communities that call this county home. And while the days begin to get shorter, the hours in those days are spent more meaningfully. We even get time back as we turn back the clocks, giving us an extra hour to enjoy our favorite season. Autumn is the season of activity. It's when we harvest our food, celebrate small town traditions, pick up a hobby, attend an event and spend more time talking with our neighbors than texting on our phones. Our Farm Bureau spends an evening celebrating the "Bounty of the County" while high schools, festivals and ethnic celebrations crown their queens and kings in rites of adolescence. We take one night to pretend to be things we are not but in a way that reminds us of where we come from and how even the scariest scare- crow is also an homage to our agricultural roots. We set aside another night to break bread with our brethren, prepare a feast for our family and dine on a delectable meal with those dearest to us. But many nights we spend searching for the perfect gift, planning the perfect get-together with friends and rediscovering the perfect place to do it was right here at home. - reggie ellis Message A U T U M N 2 017 S E A S O N S M A G A Z I N E 1
