Tulare CounTy FooTball Preview 61 Strathmore Spartans 2016 review Last season held a lot of firsts for the Strathmore Spartans. Going a perfect 13-0 through their Valley Championship was the first time they had gone undefeated up to that point in the season. One week later, they defeated Horizon Christian Academy 62-22 to win their first 6-A Southern California Regional Championship in the school's history. Then, it all came to an end at their first State Championship Game. Up until three seconds were left on the clock, the title was theirs, but a last-second field goal by the St. Vincent-St. Patrick Bruins took it from them 29-28. Key loSSeS This season, the Spartans are going to be without three of their starting offensive linemen, Jonathan Tapia, Jose Magione, and Tim Brazil. The three totaled 615 pounds of power that opened up holes for their running game. Their secondary will also be without their lead interception man in Gilbert Acevedo. Acevedo inter- cepted the ball nine times last season and his physical play from the strong safety position will be missed. 2017 Preview The mantra for this year's team is, "Do your job." That is some- thing that the Spartan's 13 returning starters should know how to do. A pair of three-year starters highlight those returners in run- ning back Joseph Garcia and quarterback Nick Salas. But head coach Jeromy Blackwell understands that they have the biggest target on their back coming into this season, and how the players handle that pressure will determine a lot. PrediCTion Even with the biggest target on their back, the Spartans will repeat as East Sequoia League champions in 2017. While it will take time for the offensive line to gain cohesion, their weapons in the backfield are too numerous. Although, the rest of the ESL doesn't seem to be making a move to challenge them. With a solid defense returning, the Spartans could see another average margin of victory of 24 points this season.
