Tulare CounTy FooTball Preview 55 Granite Hills Grizzlies 2016 review When one of your two wins comes by forfeit, you know things aren't going well for your team. Last season, Granite Hills' only legitimate win was a 17-7 victory over McFarland, a D-VI team that finished in a three-way tie for second place within a weak East Sierra League. Even if you were to throw out the 34-0 maul- ing by the Sierra Pacific Golden Bears, the Grizzlies still lost by an average of more than 10 points per game. Key loSSeS There is no shortage of talent on the Grizzlies defense, but the team will certainly have to fill the void left by center/nose tackle Oscar Mata. Active defensive linemen are key to freeing up linebackers in coach Dan Williams' scheme and he would love to have Mata's productivity. The senior forced two fumbles, had three sacks, 9 tackles for a loss and 29 tackles overall. 2017 Preview When new head coach Dan Williams arrived this spring he was told that the players at Granite Hills were unable to become students of the game: learn multiple set, multiple front offensive and defensive schemes. But Williams said over the summer that the Grizzlies have made some strides in both their physical action and mental reaction to his teachings. PrediCTion The hibernation is over in Grizzly country. Granite Hills lack of senior leadership last year should pay off for Coach Williams. The Grizzlies return all of their skill position players on offense and have replenished the offensive line with good, young talent. New schemes on both sides of the ball should catch some teams off guard and finally create an offense that can put up enough points to give its vaunted defense a fighting chance. Coach Wil- liams' experience and disciplined style of coaching should allow Granite Hills to get over the hill for their first winning season in more than a decade. Just clawing to the .500 mark would be a success.
