But Coach Lamb managed to sell the 6-foot, 175-pound Martinez on his new role, and he's taken the position in stride by improving his reads and mechanics, making him a worthy complement to their run-first style of offense. running baCk anD wiDe reCeiver three key running backs will be returning to the backfield this season with senior Anthony torres, isaiah urban and giovani Perez. one addition to the rushing corps this year is CVC transfer nico Hilvers who has spent his fair share of time in the weight room and has given Coach Lamb a lot of confidence. But it will likely be a close to even split with torres taking his 5-foot, 10-inch, 170-pound frame at the starting spot. A role that he has proven he is ready for with 1,645 career rushing yards. oFFenSive line the new man at the head of the Monarch team admitted his front line is a work in progress, and are inconsistent in size ranging from 280 pounds to 170 pounds. But Lamb hopes to make up for his team's lack of size with skillful technique. that may only last so long when the line gets deeper into the season in a run-first offense. linebaCker When Anthony torres isn't bruting through defenses at running back, he's deliver- ing hits to running backs and wide receivers. Lamb says that his tackling style at linebacker is similar to his running style at running back, physical. But he'll be joined by another running back turned linebacker, isaiah urban. Coach Lamb is going have difficulty finding ways to give his linebackers a break when they are playing both sides of the ball. something that could spell trouble late in games. CornerbaCk anD SaFeTy the back end of the defense is still sliding around on the depth chart, but things have started to settle down with some key guys showing improve- ment. one of those guys is sophomore Jared Martin who will be seeing his first action on varsity this season at the corner spot. Helping Martin along will be reliable athletic safety Christian genetti who, in 2015, had 6 interceptions, forcing teams to look the other way when passing the ball in 2016 when he came up with 1 int. "We're going to have to yank genetti out to give him a break, because he does not like coming off the field." DeFenSive line Much like on the offensive line, weight between players can swing 110 pounds from one guy to the next. An added problem is finding the right rotation of guys to play both sides of the ball in Lamb's loosely based 4-3 defense. if the Monarchs struggle to keep their linemen fresh, they could find it hard to stay in games later, or be competitive late in the season.
