Tulare CounTy FooTball Preview 47 Dinuba Emperors 2016 review For the Dinuba Emperors, the 2016 season rendered a second place finish in the Central Sequoia League with a 4-1 record. Despite being inexperienced in all areas of the defense, on the offensive line and at tail back, the Emperors scored a total of 161 points and gave up a total of only 94 points in CSL competition. The Emperors' worst regular season loss was to the eventual CSL champs Selma Bears 28-27, before being eliminated from the D-II playoffs by the Sanger Apaches 42-6. Key loSSeS This season, the Emperors will be without some key standout players — most notably Gustavo Villareal at quarterback. Villar- eal threw for 2,304 yards and 20 touchdowns to seven intercep- tions. Along the defensive line there are some big shoes to fill with the absence of Josh Grajeda at 5 feet, 8 inches and 270 pounds. While not the tallest along the line, Grajeda's technique and strength got him 47 tackles. The Emperor's shutdown corner- back Israel Garcia, with his seven interceptions, is also gone. 2017 Preview The goal once again for the Emperors is to win the D-II Valley Championship. With their leading rusher Alek Marroquin and their leading receiver Nathan Carrion returning, the Emperors stand a good chance of achieving that goal. Finding a way to defeat the defending CSL champion Selma Bears (Oct. 13) will go a long way toward that goal. Before that, the Emperors have to make it through a non-league schedule that includes the El Diamante Miners (Sep. 15) and the Tulare Union Tribe (Sep. 29). PrediCTion The Emperors were within seven points of winning the Central Sequoia League title last year. With so much talent returning on both sides of the ball for the Emperors, and a quarterback that will cut his teeth on some of the best in the Central Section, the league champion will be decided on that Oct. 13 game against Selma.
