JJ lino started all 12 games last year and ended his junior season with a 105 quarterback rating, along with 2,722 passing yards and 29 touchdowns. this season, the quarterback is seeing the field better than ever and has improved his technique and arm strength. running baCk anD wiDe reCeiver with the departure of Paden, the Cavaliers now look to their 5-foot, 9-inch and 170-pound running back Jaalen rening. He played in all 12 games as a freshman last year and put together 4 touchdowns. gavin salierno was a speedster out on the edge who lino went to often last season, and he has shown through spring workouts and summer prac- tices that he hasn't missed a step; in fact, he might have gained a few. Coach Hughes and the Cavaliers will be looking for salierno to improve on his 1,188 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns. oFFenSive line one point of emphasis for Hughes is his younger and smaller offensive line. "we aren't small, we're just small for us. so our guys have to be really disciplined and do the right thing," Hughes said. But the coach will have some help to bring his young line along, with mature play- ers like dirk nelson who started at guard as a freshman, and tackle Hayden Houtsma who is entering his senior year. linebaCker A familiar face on the linebacking corps is gavin salierno. His size and strength, which make him a unique wide receiver on the offensive side of the ball, also lends itself to big hits from the outside linebacker position. in 2016, salierno threw his 6-foot-2, 175-pound body into runners for 63 tackles. But salierno will have to compete for hits with Hayden Jones at middle linebacker. in 2016, Jones made 48 solo tackles out of his 75 total tackles. CornerbaCk anD SaFeTy CvC's secondary is one worth fearing. with several returners coming back with even more experience, Hughes has reason to have confi- dence on the back end of his defense, starting with Jaalen rening who amassed 75 total tackles from free safety. rening will be joined by fellow veterans Brian noel and tanner rocha who played at cornerback in 2016 and combined for 36 total tackles on the season. DeFenSive line Hughes will be keeping his defensive linemen as fresh as possible by making sure they stay on that side of the ball. the problem is not num- bers in their three-man front, it is actually inexperience. their returning starter in Cody Chlouber at nose guard is sure to be a force up front, but Coach Hughes currently doesn't know who is going to be playing on either side of him. Hughes said that it is an open competition.
