At the start of the season, two quarter- backs are vying to see who will be the starter following up Aguilar's stellar senior performance. According to rocha, sophomore Elijah Burrell and junior Anthony cervantes are battling it out. Each of them have their strengths: cervantes' deep ball passing; Burrell can tuck it and run with the best of them. As of the first week of practice, rocha was leaning towards cervantes because of his maturity, but Burrell has made significant strides and could outpace the older cervantes. running baCk anD wiDe reCeiver lining up in the backfield this year will be a familiar face in David Alcantar. in his sophomore and junior years, Alcantar dazzled defenses to the tune of 1,583 yards and 23 touchdowns on the ground while catching 4 others. "he's… a hard worker and he's a do-it-all guy," said rocha, who added that he wanted to start putting Alcantar in the slot and pair him with junior wide receiver keshon Butler who, rocha says, is the best athlete he's ever coached. oFFenSive line tulare Western has a senior-heavy front line this season and is actually converting one of the defensive starters to guard in Ezra Emrich. Em- rich is a strong 220 pounds on a 6-foot frame and will add even more strength to an already experienced o-line. linebaCker mustang senior and captain Julian trevio is leading the front six for tulare Western this season, and it is clear he's ready for the role. in his two years on varsity, he managed 81 total tackles, 49 solo tackles, 7.5 sacks, and 3 fumble recoveries. CornerbaCk anD SaFeTy coach rocha is excited to see what the senior year of three-year varsity starter ryan tucker brings to the safety position. taking over for the graduated EJ Early, tucker has managed 78 tackles in his career and 4 interceptions. rocha says his mental and physical game is similar to Early's. At cornerback, rocha plans to rely on players such as nate mora and Jordan Burrell, brother of Elijah Burrell. rocha heaps praise on Jordan for his athletic ability but won't be shy to throw in keshon Butler to match-up against the speedy receiver. DeFenSive line two guys that will see the lion's share of action on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball this year is John harmon and rigo lopez, both captains on the mustang's squad. rocha says they are the heart and soul of both sides of the line. Joining them is a monstrous defensive end in camryn haynes, who not only sets the edge but is the edge at 6 feet, 3 inches and 260 pounds. "[haynes] is a tremendously talented kid and he's special, a real special kid," rocha said.
