Tulare CounTy FooTball Preview 19 Mt. Whitney Pioneers 2016 review Last year was truly a rebuilding year for Mt. Whitney. The team started seven sophomores who were part of the undefeated freshman team two years ago. Coach Marty Martin rebooted the Pioneers by booting some of the upperclassman who lacked dedi- cation to the sport and the team. But with so many sophomores, it was a steep learning curve for a team that lost seven games by an average of 27 points. Key loSSeS While there is plenty of young talent on the team, the Pioneers lost some key experience at important positions. Luis Aldana and Nick Sanchez will no longer anchor the offensive line. The team also lost its leading rusher, Jason Rosas, who ran for more than 700 yards, and the heart of the defense, Jed Whetstone. It will be difficult to replace Whetstone's leadership and productivity. Whet- stone led the team with 77 tackles. Jose Cisneros at wide receiver is also gone along with his team's leading 692 yards. 2017 Preview Thanks to starting so many young players, Mt. Whitney has more experience and depth heading into this season. The Pioneers' offensive and defensive schemes are predicated on speed. Their motto is "4 to 6, A to B" meaning that every play is 4 to 6 seconds long and that is how much time they have to get from where they are to where they need to be. Their team speed will al- low them to move the ball in their up-tempo style of play on both sides of the ball. PrediCTion The Pioneers can't stay young forever. Starting so many players as sophomores will start to pay off this year. Coach Martin said the team has physically responded well to preseason workouts and is making strides in their mental preparation as well. But we probably won't see this team reach its full athletic potential for another year, when this formerly undefeated freshman team have starters with three years' experience at nearly every position.
