Boswell played in all but one game in his sophomore season and is an extremely teachable player. He always has his head in the game and tries to keep everyone else in the right positions. running baCk anD wiDe reCeiver Andrew Valdez returns at running back and will split time with junior Drake Beno and sophomore Jermyren Goodman. Valdez has good size at 6 feet and 190 pounds and has played quarterback, which gives him more knowledge of blocking schemes and where to go with the ball. Coach Rogers says sophomore Jayvon Hightower has a chance to be the best wide receiver in his 17 years of coaching the Miners. The 6-foot- 2 Hightower played varsity basketball as a freshman and has great jumping ability, adding the fade route to Boswell's options. oFFenSive line Coach Rogers believes that your offense can only be as good as your offensive line. He said this year's group is more athletic than last year's senior heavy group, but returns third-year starter Jesus Perez at center. Perez will be the glue that holds this unit together as the players will be tested in non-league matchups at Tulare Union and Tulare Western to start the season. linebaCker Many of the sophomores starters on this team will be working for the linebacking corps. Luckily, the defense's best players will be like a coach for them on the field. Junior Jake Garbani is not only the captain of the defense, but the vocal leader for the team. He missed all but a few plays last year after being injured in the first game and hasn't missed an opportunity to treat every moment as a golden nugget of opportunity. As a freshman on varsity, Garbani had 31 tackles in nine games. CornerbaCk anD SaFeTy It will be tough to replace the leadership and athleticism of safeties Nolan Montgomery and TJ Wheeler. So, it was not surprising when Coach Rogers stated that this unit will need the most coaching and will have to make the biggest leaps in play before league begins. DeFenSive line Any coach whose philosophy is that the offense starts with the line, knows that the other team's offense must be stopped at the line. This might be the strongest unit on the defense with third-year starter Jared Torres and junior Isaiah Good returning at the tackles. With Garbani backing them up, the middle of the Miners defense should be stout un- less the defensive backfield is in shambles. The edges on this defense are complete question marks.
