As 2017 gave way to 2018, city officials said 90 percent of the track has been completed. Mayor Tom Barrett, whose name is oftentimes associated with the project and has been an advocate from the get-go, wrote a two-page report last month, out- lining the status of the work. Of the track's near completion, Barrett in the report said, "Crews were able to get this work done in one construction season, in part due to favorable fall weather." Despite the blustery winter weather that has since taken place in this new year, City Engineer Jeff Polenske said infrastructure- related work will continue. "The overhead wires are going to be installed, which is ideally suited as a winter project," Polenske said in an interview with the Post.
