OUTDOOR TRUTHS Most of us hunters like to consider our- selves of the diehard variety. We're not afraid to get up early, stay out late, and do whatever it takes to get our deer; un- less it's walk more than about a quarter of a mile from our vehicle. It's true. Most hunters don't hunt too far off the beaten path. I've actually seen some folks ride their four-wheeler up to the very tree they are hunting in. They say the deer never notice. I say they do. I do believe when deer are pressured they move to some strange places. Oftentimes it's right next to a road or even a highway. I can remember one year while hunting in Alabama, my friend set up right next to a four lane highway. On the last day of the hunt he killed a nice eight- pointer. I'm sure that deer never imagined a hunter setting up in such an uncommon area. For me, there's something about being in a place where I can hear no road noise. I don't like having to listen for the rustle of leaves through the sounds of rush hour. The purity of the hunt seems tainted when the sounds of the woods are competing with the sounds of a nearby highway. I like being able to hear every squirrel's bark and every birds chirp. I've noticed my time with the Lord is often characterized this way as well. I fi nd at times I try to hear God without getting far enough away from the sounds of my daily grind. It may be a cell phone, a T.V., or even a time restraint that's not allowing me to hear all that I'm meant to hear. As a result, the experi- ence is not what I need or what God wants. The problem is that I'm just hunting (praying) too close to my truck. I'm doing it because it's the easiest thing to do. But again, the best ones are far off the beaten path. Right now there's something you need God to speak to you about. You have a need, or a prob- lem, or a direction that you have questions about. And it's a big one. For these-sized answers you're going to have to get away from all the sounds of the world you're in and remove yourself from anything that will keep your attention from Him. It may take a little longer and a little more effort to get there, but we know that both will have been worth it when you return with the God-sized answer you had hoped for. By By Gary Miller Aiming Outdoorsmen Toward Christ ller ller ller ller GARY MILLER gary@outdoortruths.org ~ www.outdoortruths.org The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission's Home From The Hunt™ campaign reminds waterfowl hunters to take basic safety precautions while hunting from a vessel. "Hypothermia causes more hunter fatalities than fi rearm accidents," said Maj. Chris Huebner, the state's boating safety coordinator. "It's important to be prepared and dress appropriately while hunting from a boat in cold weather. Wear clothing made of wool or other synthetic materials instead of cotton. And, as always, wear a personal fl oatation device. These simple practices can save your life." The Commission also recommends that hunters: • Be aware that small, fl at-bottom vessels are prone to capsizing and swamping. • Keep hunting dogs prone in the center of the boat. • Store equipment properly and keep it evenly distributed. • Never move about the boat with a loaded shotgun. • Don't overload the boat, especially with passengers. • Always let someone know your whereabouts and an approximate return time. • In the event of capsizing or swamping, stay with the boat and use it as a fl oatation device. The Wildlife Commission has set dates, bag limits and applicable regulations for the 2017-2018 waterfowl seasons, with tundra swan (by permit only), duck and geese hunting. It was 21-0 to start with two early turnovers and TJCA (11-2) cut it back to 21-6, before going down 28-6 at the half. Unfortunately, it was too much of a defi cit to overcome. The Gryphons did cut it back to 35-20 again, but never got over the two touchdown defi cit. It seemed like none of the penalties went against Cherokee, which has been unusual all season. The Gryphons haven't been penalized much. Anytime there was a big play by TJ, here comes the fl ag. Still, they couldn't stop the Braves quarterback Tye Mintz (four touchdown runs) which effectively ends the season. Nomi McMullens had another 170 yards passing and 100 yards rushing as a leader with Max Robbins gaining another 65 yards receiving. Stephen Hargett had the most yards with just over 100. Robbins and Hargett are seniors. Bill Lay (close to 1500 yards rushing), Miller Outten, Josh Mellon, Caleb Camp, John Camp, Jonathan Hargro, Nathaniel Qualls and Zander Bell were all key contributing seniors this season. Coach Jerry Cash has 55 wins in six seasons with Thomas Jefferson. The Gryphons have never won less than six games during his tenure in a season and have won 10 games or more now four years in a row. The Gryphons have won a playoff game in each of the last four seasons. Congrats on the season Thomas Jefferson! College Football Playoff picture Right now, I like Clemson, Auburn, Wisconsin and Oklahoma as the four best teams. Alabama, Ohio St., Georgia, and Miami are on the cusp. This thing has been crazy all year. This week is conference championship week and a lot of questions are about to be answered, or are they? It is all just opinion, but as far as I am concerned, you have to look at the body of work and how they are playing down the stretch. Right now, these four are doing what they need to do. Southwestern 2A Men's conference projections: 6. Chase 5.East Gaston 4. Shelby 3. R-S Central 2. East Rutherford 1. South Point. The race to the conference title should be wide open for the guys. This could be one of the most hotly contested leagues in the state. Anybody can beat anybody on any given night and I don't see anybody going undefeated this season.
