A new sea- son of a popular sci-fi drama launches into space this season, and the adventure promises to have viewers on the edge of their seats. Clark Gregg ("Iron Man," 2008) returns as Agent Phil Coulson, who finds himself aboard a vessel in deep space with some of his col- leagues in the season premiere of "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.," airing Friday, Dec. 1, on ABC. The change in setting makes way for some new characters and thrilling new adventures as Director Coul- son and his agents race to save hu- manity as the clock ticks down on Earth. The two-hour premiere marks the show's move to Fridays, after four seasons of Tuesday night broadcasts. Now it will face off against other broadcast televi- sion heavyweights, such as CBS's "Hawaii Five-0" and Fox's "The Exorcist," but ABC execu- tive Channing Dungey isn't worried. "Season 5 is their strongest sea- son yet, and we can't wait for the fans to see it," Dungey said in a re- lease. "We feel that the move to Friday, creating a 'genre night' on ABC, appeals to the show's loyal fan base." Beginning Friday, Dec. 8, "Mar- vel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." joins ABC's whimsical series "Once Upon a Time" for an evening of sci- fi-fantasy drama. While it appears that not all of Coulson's colleagues made it onto the ship, many fan favorites are re- turning this season. As the leader of S.H.I.E.L.D. (Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Lo- gistics Division), Coulson and his team protect humanity in a world inhabited by superheroes, supervil- lains and other threats. Gregg orig- inated the character in the 2008 action flick "Iron Man," and has appeared in a number of Marvel's big-screen hits since then. For those not in the know, ABC's "S.H.I.E.L.D." is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), mean- ing what happens in the show can impact what happens in the mov- ies and vice versa. In season 5 of "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.," Ming-Na Wen ("ER") continues her role as Agent Melinda May, a weapons expert and skilled pilot.
