TV Media Weekly | November 18 - 24, 2017 By Adam Thomlison TV Media Q: Is it true Roy Scheider ad- libbed the "bigger boat" line in Jaws? A: It's true that the line wasn't in the script, but "Jaws" (1975) star Roy Scheider didn't come up with it on his own. "You're gonna need a bigger boat" was actually a com- plaint that many of the crew mem- bers had been making to the pro- ducers about the little barge they were given to film the horror clas- sic's open-water scenes. Script writer Carl Gottleib told the story to The Hollywood Report- er: "[Richard] Zanuck and [David] Brown were very stingy producers, so everyone kept telling them, 'You're gonna need a bigger boat.' It became a catchphrase for any- time anything went wrong — if lunch was late or the swells were rocking the camera, someone would say, 'You're gonna need a bigger boat.'" Scheider apparently dropped the line several times during film- ing, but the instance that made the final cut — when Scheider's char- acter first sets eyes on the mon- strous shark they're trying to catch from the deck of their little fishing boat — was deemed to be perfect. However, Gottleib is still unwill- ing to give Scheider all the credit for it. "It was so appropriate and so real and it came at the right moment, thanks to Verna Fields's editing." Q: What's Fremulon, the company name that comes up at the end of "The Good Place"? A: If you believe Michael Schur, it's an insurance firm: "a very shady company that's mixed up in a lot of financial shenanigans — and possibly international weap- ons deals — and is using its enter- tainment wing as a tax shelter." But you shouldn't believe Michael Schur. He's the creator and producer of "The Good Place" along with a number of other beloved modern sitcoms, such as "Brooklyn Nine- Nine," "Parks and Recreation" and "Master of None," all of which happen to also be Fremulon prod- ucts. That's because Fremulon is actually the name of Schur's pro- duction company. The name traces back to his pre- TV days, when he was just a strug- gling comedy blogger. In an inter- view with The Hollywood Reporter, which is the source of the above quote about international weap- ons deals, he says that Fremulon was the name of the company his blog alter-ego, Ken Tremendous, worked for. Hollywood Q&A By Andrew Warren TV Media I t's beginning to look a lot like Christmas, especially on Food Network where special pro- grams celebrating the holiday are in full swing. Whether baked sweets, savory delights or a little bit of both are what's tempting your taste buds with only a month or so to go until the big day, there's definitely something to satisfy almost any taste on TV screens these days. This year, Giada De Laurentiis is back for a third season of "Gia- da's Holiday Handbook," airing Sundays on Food Network. This time of year is prime time for host- ing get-togethers with friends and family, and Giada is full of great advice for how to make sure that guests never leave with empty stomachs. This week's episode, airing Sunday, Nov. 19, is all about the day after Thanksgiving. With that classic American holiday fast ap- proaching, the question of what to do with all those leftovers is probably far from most people's minds, but Giada is never one to leave planning until the last min- ute. Black Friday marks the start of the Christmas season, but rather than shopping, Giada has friends and family over to start the gift wrapping — and, of course, to en- joy some delicious homemade food. For the festive gathering, Gia- da transforms her Thanksgiving leftovers into an incredible buf- fet. The host makes it look all too easy as she makes Italian hot brown crostini, mashed potato zeppole and antipasti skewers. She even makes cranberry and rosemary juleps to really help get her guests into the holiday spirit. Speaking of cocktails, they're the focus of next week's episode when Giada hosts a Christmas cocktail party. Of course, a cock- tail party needs appetizers, and she doesn't disappoint on that front with spinach and artichoke panini bites, citrus-marinated ol- ives and chocolate coconut cake. As the season continues, Giada also showcases some of her sugar cookies that are perfect for mak- ing with children, and she even gives an Italian tradition a Califor- nia vibe when she plays host on Christmas Eve. For Giada De Laurentiis, it re- ally is the most wonderful time of the year. "Giada's Holiday Handbook" airs Sundays on Food Network.
