November 17, 2017 • Milwaukee County Post • 7 BUSINESS MILWAUKEE — The Milwaukee Filmmaker Alliance announced that the film and media industry is generating $1.55 billion in sales in 2014 and 15,000 jobs in southeastern Wisconsin. The jobs are more than five times the number employed in beer manufacturing and distribution, according to a study assessing the film industry in Milwaukee, Kenosha, Ozaukee, Racine, Walworth, Washington and Waukesha counties, known as the M7 region. In 2014, the film and media industry contributed $530 million in labor income throughout southeastern Wisconsin, according to the study revealed at a Nov. 10 Milwaukee Filmmaker Alliance event. From 2010 to 2015, the industry expe- rienced a 10 percent growth rate, double that of the overall Greater Milwaukee econ- omy's growth. "The local film and media industry and economy are growing at incredible rates, but there remains limitless untapped poten- tial," said Milwaukee Filmmaker Alliance Director Suzanne Jurva. "The Milwaukee Filmmaker Alliance plans to support and meet the needs of the region's film and media industry by providing opportunities for filmmakers to promote their work and skills, network with other professionals, and hone their skills through education pro- grams." A news release from the alliance said that as the local film and media community generates more jobs and economic activity, greater value can be added to traditional non-media sectors through services such as commercial video, web content creation and social media marketing., as well as draw a creative young workforce. The study by ICF International of Fairfax, Va., said, "Greater Milwaukee is home to a dynamic emerging film industry, and the region has many key assets needed to support its development into a significant economic cluster." The Motion Picture Association of America reports that 1.9 million workers in all 50 states are a part of the film and televi- sion industry, contributing $41 billion to over 345,000 businesses annually. Milwaukee is home to less than 1 percent of these work- ers. Key challenges for the area indicated in the study include limited opportunities for funding and investing in films, the need for more connectivity among professionals and resources in the industry, and the need for greater external relationships and expo- sure. Also recognized are Milwaukee's cur- rent assets, including strong higher educa- tion systems, low cost of living and doing business, and the annual Milwaukee Film Festival, which has served the local film- making community for nearly a decade. MILWAUKEE — The latest report from the national Information Technology & Innovation Foundation puts Wisconsin in the middle of its 50-state rankings, which is the highest the state has ranked in its "New Economy Index" since it was first published in 1999. Wisconsin ranked 26th overall in the November 2017 index, just behind Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania and just ahead of Nebraska, Missouri and Idaho. Top-ranked states were Massachusetts, California, Washington, Virginia, Delaware and Maryland. In previous years, Wisconsin's highest rank overall was 29th and once stood as low as 37th among the 50 states as tracked by the independent, nonprofit foundation. Among the state's highest-ranking indi- vidual categories are sixth for egovern- ment, 11th for broadband telecommunica- tions and 12th for information technology jobs. Its lowest rankings were 43rd for for- eign direct investment, 38th for export focus of manufacturing and also 38th for business churning. The 25 indicators were part of five broad- er categories: Knowledge jobs, globaliza- tion, economic dynamism, the digital econo- my and innovation capacity. Wisconsin ranked 26th, 41st, 35th, 9th and 27th, respec- tively, in those five major groupings. "The report shows Wisconsin making important strides in the laying of the foun- dation for a stronger digital economy, although much work remains in terms of making Wisconsin more global in its busi- ness and industry outlook," said Tom Still, president of the Wisconsin Technology Council.
