By DAVE FIDLIN Special to the Post MILWAUKEE — A 2018 spending plan calling for an increase in property taxes and cuts to public safety has been approved by Milwaukee aldermen. The document is now before Mayor Tom Barrett for his review. Public safety funding in 2018 has been at the heart of budget deliberations since Barrett gave his initial overview of the municipal budget in August. With state shared revenue and other income sources on the down- swing, Barrett has been call- ing for state authority to implement a municipal sales tax. The council-approved budget clocks in at $1.53 bil- lion and includes an increase in the amount of taxes levied against property owners. With a 2-cent rise in the tax rate factored into the mix — from $10.75 per $1,000 of assessed valuation to $10.77 — city officials are project- ing the owner of a median- valued property of $108,000 will pay $37 on the municipal line item of next month's tax bill. Milwaukee's 15 aldermen held a special five-hour council meeting Nov. 10 to make final amendments to the budget. Officials wran- gled over elements of the plan. Some last-minute pitches — including a dis- parity study — were added. In the end, the document was adopted on a 11-4 vote. Aldermen Bob Bauman, Mark Borkowski, Bob Donovan and Tony Zielinski were the dissenters. The greatest amount of debate and discussion at the recent budget meeting occurred over the disparity study.
