When I think about Veterans Day, I always think about my Grandfather, or as we called him Paw-Paw. He didn't tell many stories about his time in the Navy, but I knew he was proud he served this country. After he passed, I remember looking through old pictures and being drawn to the ones of him in his Navy uniform. The classic black and white photos of an almost lost generation. Today, things change so fast it's sometimes hard to keep up, but there are things worth taking time for; honoring our Veterans is one of those things. The freedoms we enjoy, the rights we cherish, are because there were sacrifices made and wars fought to keep them. Gen. Colin L. Powell, USA (Ret.) put it best when he said, "On Veterans Day, put out your flags, cheer the marchers at parades, and go to tributes. But when you wake up the next day, November 12, remember that it's still Veterans Day for our veterans — and it will be every day of their lives." This Veterans Day, join us in honoring those that have served, those that are serving, and the families that sacrifice just as much to support those that serve. Each year, dedicated citizens join together with various Veterans organizations throughout Rutherford County to hold the Salute to Veterans event. This is a FREE community event that lets Veterans, their families, and the entire community socialize, swap stories, and just have a lot of fun! The celebration includes displays of artwork from local students thanking Veterans for their service, several military vehicles on display, and of course food. There will also be someone on hand from the U.S. Marines, Toys for Tots drive, so make sure to bring a new, unwrapped toy to donate. Mark your calendars for this Veteran's Day, November 11 from 9:30am–11:00am at R.S. Middle School in Rutherfordton. Let's make this the best event yet and show our local heroes how much they mean to us. Free Community Salute To Veterans Event Saturday, November 11 at R.S.
